[Discord] <bret> Yeah, I got one from 2023, that’s what I meant, I didn’t expect to find a working one but I did 😄 It even survived a full apt upgrade
<Dex2x>
Does the armbian-config do anything special if you switch kernels? Seems just doing apt install got me into a boot failure
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> Dex2x: you can chroot and install correct kernel ... kernel switching can lead to boot failure. which board / case you have?
<Dex2x>
Orangepi 5 , I got it to boot now
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> vendor / current switch should work, if you use fresh image
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> edge kernel, there its much more problematic
<Dex2x>
well I was on the legacy kernel, just wanted to go to the current and it just broke the boot
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> ahaa, legacy ... that is very old
<Dex2x>
yeah no idea how I got stuck on that
<Dex2x>
Current didn't actually boot. With edge I managed to boot with uart, but seems after shutdown I am not booting again
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> legacy as in 5.10?
<Dex2x>
yeah 5.10
<Dex2x>
removed that, going to test current now. At least edge is booting, but my ip settings changed
<Dex2x>
okay at least 6.12.22-current-rockchip64 is now booted

What does the vendor version change ?
kerzhak has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.8.2+deb3.1+deb12u1 - https://znc.in]
<Dex2x>
Is that the version compiled by orangepi ?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> vendor kernel is hw feature complete, but has other issues
<Dex2x>
Like being behind ?
<Dex2x>
Is there a guide to when to or for which boards to rather use the vendor one? I haven't seen any issues with my orangepi5

curious the legacy and vendor kernels changes the mac address of the nic
<Dex2x>
or it's the current/edge that does

[Discord] <menu> Dex2x: RK3588 GMAC ethernet has no fixed address, it's generated at boot, but you can easily set it to whatever you desire
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i use `66:66:66:00:00:00`-`66:66:66:FF:FF:FF` for virtualisation, with a fallback to `DE:AD:DE:AD:DE:AD` when it fails to start PVE correctly
