[Discord] <amazingfate> you may try the recovery img from armbian to create the partition, which is built from latest armbian code
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <bean72> oh? That is worth a shot, where do I download the image?

[Discord] <bean72> @amazingfate I figured it out, and I think it was something that you pointed out earlier. I was in active boot slot a when running all the commands, even though they were all for slot b. I confirmed I was in slot a, then ran all the commands for slot a. Now it's booting, thank you for the help
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> glad to hear that!

[Discord] <reddeck_> I bought some ~~e-waste~~ a new home server, and will try Armbian x86-64 on it.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> still nfs is the best way to share a drive to Proxmox/ESXI over network?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> or I am not keeping up with time?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> Ceph is arguably better for PVE
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> but NFS *works*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> though if you've got a new home server, why not run PVE on it directly and virtualise Armbian?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> It's a HP microserver, and I have my old PC as PVE/ESXI
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> I just want to use it as network storage
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> but ceph looks interesting, and it's a homelab so i dont care if it breaks every once in a while
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> there's a dozen ways to skin this particular cat, personally i'd run PVE (or even PVE-on-armbian) on the new hardware if only to provide extra build environments
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> can you walk me through your train of thought?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> PVE on armbian seems interesting though
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> unused hardware is for the most part, wasted hardware, PVE stacks nicely on top of debian as a frontend to Qemu/KVM, i actually run PVE-on-armbian and do nearly everything inside VMs
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> though lately i've been migrating what i can to NixOS
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> CPU is AMD Turion II Neo N40L (1.5 Ghz) K625 so that might be a bottleneck, it has 8gb of ddr3 ram, 2x 8Tb brand new spinners, 2x320gb old spinners, and a 128gb ssd for OS
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> yeah but the hardware is really really weak this is why i want to use it as storage for my other PVE that has the ram/CPU but not enough storage
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> ain't the fastest CPU for sure, but it's quite efficient, NFS may certainly cover your needs tbh
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> the I/O of the vm's are not that much, mostly just cold data, so I feel i could get away with vm disks on a 1gbs link
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> but yeah i'll I just wanted to see what else I could try 😛
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> like ceph, never heard of it til today but it looks interesting
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> it might not be appropriate, i don't actually run ceph because i still don't move data across the network
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> it's a homelab if it's not broken like half the time then whats the point 🙂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> this is *production*, my test environment just happens to be the same environment 🤣
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> if i knock it offline i can no longer turn my lights on or off
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> ooof I feel you, it's the same for me at work. Every single change has the possibility to bring down the whole hotel with 200+ rooms.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> I only did that like 3 times this year (so far)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i'm *hopefully* getting some more hardware soon so i can at least build *some* redundancy, though it was supposed to have arrived last quarter
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> redundancy is nice. So my company is now building a server on prem
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> Setting up with nextcloud etc by someone. I stay as clear from that project as humanely possible.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> "It has raid so it has backups" you know 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> they put the would be fileserver under the AC for cooling which is nice, but gues where the AC will leak when not if it does 😄

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> raid is not a backup, and i bet that's hardware raid too 🤮
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> I know, you know. they WILL know 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> they see the word "redundant" and go "oh that means we don't need backups"
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i'd spend all my free time drumming on the chassis to make those drives fail as quick as possible, let them find out *before* all the data is migrated
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> yep
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> and then use the opportunity to up-sell a backup solution of course
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> aaaaand i screwed up in a big way 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> ordered 2x2TB nvme driver and a pci to 2x 2280 adapter. I expected it to be 2x2 lanes to a total of four, but nope
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <reddeck_> 1x pciex4 and 1x 2280 sata with a sata port on the back of the card :/
