[Discord] <human_urostor> Something has been puzzling me for a long time. Why does it say next to the vendor kernel that it's "for Developers"? I really don't understand
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> For SBCs that use the Rockchip 3588 you’ll usually see the “vendor kernel” 6.1 & the mainline kernel (6.12+)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> The vendor kernel is released by Rockchip & is pre-patched with additional drivers & modules for optimal hardware compatibility with the 3588
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> However, it’s seen as a “developer” kernel because it’s not as stable as the mainline & not affiliated with the latest builds from the official Linux community (running updates have been known to break functionality)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> Hardware compatibility is slowly but surely being added to the mainline kernels & can be tracked here
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> Mainline = official Linux kernel (better long term stability in exchange for some missing hardware functionality for the time being. Better for headless servers)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> Vendor = Rockchip mod of the Linux kernel for their chipset (better for desktop/gaming applications in exchange for a potentially less stable experience)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> However, it’s seen as a “developer” kernel because it’s not as stable as the mainline & not affiliated with the latest builds from the official Linux community (according to forums, running updates have been known to sometimes break functionality)

[Discord] <igorpec> Where it says that?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> In theory all kernels are for developer since most of these boards call themselves "development boards" lol
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> That too, but people still expect 100% stability. Or more 😀
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> yes, sometimes even more than that ^^

[Discord] <human_urostor> When you choose the kernel in compile.sh
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <human_urostor> I know all that, this was not the question, I'm już puzzled about this wording because the vendor kernel (it seems to me) is "less" for developers, as more hardware is supported
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <human_urostor> I know all that, this was not the question, I'm just puzzled about this wording because the vendor kernel (it seems to me) is "less" for developers, as more hardware is supported

[Discord] <human_urostor> I know the difference, this was not the question, I'm just puzzled about this wording because the vendor kernel (it seems to me) is "less" for developers, as more hardware is supported
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <human_urostor> From the word "experimental" I infer that this previously referred to a different branch of the vendor kernel, more bleeding edge, now there's just 1 vendor kernel but the text stayed

[Discord] <bugzbanger> Hi all, I am trying to compile a kernel with a 64k page size, and I can see in my confim it says 64k , however if I boot it's back to the 4k default. What am I doing wrong? I used the kernel configure , to set the page size to 64 but once i have then written that image to the sdcard and boot, nothing. This is with my orangepi 5
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <bugzbanger> I have mounted the image once it was compiled and check in the /boot/config-{kernel} , (this is now before writing to the sdcard, just checking the .img file), and I still CONFIG_ARM64_4K_PAGES=y # CONFIG_ARM64_16K_PAGES is not set # CONFIG_ARM64_64K_PAGES is not set
