Okay so some progress and some more setbacks. The minimal version installed for me, however, unlike the Cinnamon version I installed earlier today, this minimal version can't detect my TP-LINK WiFi dongle :( lsusb shows it detected, RTL8188EUF 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter, but 'ip a' shows only lo and end1 detected, no wireless device to be found. I then dragged it all the way across the house
<canadian>
just to stick an ethernet cord in it, did an apt update, apt upgrade, rebooted (this time we survived!), yet sadly lo and behold, still no WiFi connectivity
<canadian>
I need WiFi working again before I can begin actually using this device, so any help would be appreciated
<canadian>
As mentioned, it was detected already automatically in the larger Cinnamon version

[Discord] <Werner> `current` is a bad idea in terms of deskto usage and rk3588. Use `vendor` or `edge`.
<canadian>
I installed 1password and Librewolf onto my new Armbian install, but the desktop app can't integrate with the browser extension
<canadian>
Is it sandboxed?
<canadian>
flyback: hi :)
<canadian>
also my Razer 2.4ghz doesn't work properly in Armbian, it can only accept signal from the keyboard but not both keyboard and mouse at once like it does in Ubuntu/PopOS or Windows
<canadian>
I'm guessing we're missing some kind of driver
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Userspace comes directly from Debian or Ubuntu, depending on flavor. Installing applications is out of scope for us.
<canadian>
I can't get 1Password Desktop to syncrhonize with Browser extensions in Armbian
<canadian>
No matter what I do or have tried, installing from .tar.gz , from .deb, from repo
<canadian>
There must be some kind of sandboxing going on
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> Canadian: Armbian applies no additional sandboxing outside of the upstream userspace, can you get it to work using the upstream?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> What kind of toaaster is that? neat looking actually
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> What kind of toaster is that? neat looking actually
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> that's a Revolution "smart toaster", i've never seen one in person, think they're a US thing?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Hmm. I'l have to look that up... (I'm in the states..)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Just got back from a month in France though... that was too relaxing...

<flyback>
I been jobless for 2 yrs
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> The weather just sucks here
<flyback>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Ohio
<flyback>

<flyback>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Been getting slammed by those storms too
<flyback>
yeah I got ups's on everything for now
<flyback>
starting to lose batteries :/
<flyback>
and with ship costs and trump tarrifs dunno whe I can replace them
<flyback>
I managed to revive 2
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Been having fun though ... working on 2 Orion O6's and RISC-V nowadays
<flyback>
I been refurbing hard drives using a special vendor format command and also taking old backups of the folks computers, convert them to temp vm's, extract browser setting etc then delete
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Heh I have about 50 or so hard drives I need to take to a place to destrpy lol
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> er destroy
<flyback>
shredos works pretty good for erasing if they work
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I have a whole room full of junk/old parts to get rid of....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> 80% of it isn't even worth using anymore
<flyback>
yeah I gave away about 500 in old x86 parts to the 86box team

[Discord] <menu> my primary machine is a 2015 13" macbook pro, jokingly called the "LifesupportBook Pro" because it is... not well
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> 28°C today, i *cannot* work
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> It finally cooled off here.. It had been much warmer..
<flyback>
why is it not well
<flyback>
menu
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> flyback: it's a decade old macbook that i got second hand, it overheats in the dead of winter, nevermind peak summer temperatures 🥲
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> fan must be dead
<flyback>
hmm sounds like a *CANUCKED* fan or dirty cheatsink or the paste has deteriated
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> mbp's has a fan the air's don't if I remember right
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I know my M1 MBP definitely has one.. I hear it spin up when I push it hard
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> fan is fine, runs at 6199 rpm as set, heatsink works fine, it's chucking out hot air but the chassis gets too hot to touch, hence the cardboard cooler 😂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> both my o/h's air and my pro from the same year have fans, but 4th gen intel is *hot*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Thats odd... We have a last gen intel MBP and it never gets hot
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> You definitely got something either "in" the chassis or wrong with heat transfer plate...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> bear in mind this is a decade old machine, it's incredibly tired, and they improved cooling (whilst degrading other things) on later models
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Yeah... This one is from 2014 or so...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> whatever year the last Intel MBP was made
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> (starting)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> the last Intel MBP was 2019 from memory
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> no... January 6, 2009
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> the 2009s were very solid, had decent thermals from memory
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> it was discontinued in October 2018
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Yes. I agree..thats why I think your unit has damage

[Discord] <tenkawa42> Apple's engineering is very good
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> usually physical damage is usually the rare time that occurs
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> this isn't a 2009, this is a 2015, they are not comparable
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> ok yeah I see the smaller units lasted longer
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> This chart is terrible
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> it would probably benefit from some new paste, but the heatsink is still reaching temperature as expected, i'm mostly just asking roo much of it
<DC-IRC>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> one day i intend to design an Arm mainboard for it, the display uses eDP, the keyboard/trackpad are USB, i don't care about the speakers; don't currently have another machine to work on while it's being gutted though
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> My poor M1 is about to be dropped at the end of this year I think
<flyback>
at least it's not that stupid imac with the hybrid hard drive/ssd combo that dies and you can't disable the ssd so the system runs like shit cause it keeps trying to find the ssd
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> don't get me started on imacs
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i crave an M1 badly, but it'll never be in budget
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> heh actually my box is officially out of hardware support.. lol
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I just looked it up
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> It runs fine enough for me... I'll keep it until it drops
<DC-IRC>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I've only used Macs as my desktop for about 20 years now.. and only laptops
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I'm on the move too much...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> when it drops, Asahi will support it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Actually they have been talking about not doing it for the M1 I thin
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Actually they have been talking about not doing it for the M1 I think
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I've heard both directions...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> Asahi already supports the M1, it's the M3/4 that aren't *yet* supported, and may never be
<DC-IRC>

<flyback>
can I go 10/10 old imagges converted to a temp vm?
<flyback>

<flyback>
woot
<flyback>
activation wil spaz but usually runs a few days enough to extract info
<flyback>
hmm no mouse or keyboard yet
<flyback>
hmm looks like xp is going to instant disable
<flyback>
fortunitely this is no longer a concern

fires up activation crack
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> If you are just copying data couldn't you just mount these on a Linux VM?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> and mount the fs
<flyback>
no some browser passwords and bookmarks have to rub from the browser and choose export
<flyback>
else I could just directely mount the backup disk images directely and not use a vm
<flyback>
and copy files
<flyback>
going good so far
<flyback>
had to run a comman but I got 30 days to use this vm
<flyback>
before activation times out
<flyback>
I only need less tha 1 day
<canadian>
I did "chsh" and very clearly have it set to /bin/zsh yet the terminal button on the taskbar keeps launching as bash for some reason
<canadian>
and echo $SHELL says /bin/bash once it's launched. Why?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> did you chsh username..
<canadian>
yes
<canadian>
and even running the command again shows the default [/bin/zsh] at the prompt
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I usually use chsh -s blah user.... make sure you log out of all sessions though
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> hmm must be a Armbian thing

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> not sure if there's something in the environment loading something
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> canadian: which terminal? what happens if you launch it directly rather than through a shortcut?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @menu That was a direct/ssh test... it would be better if we "did" see a shortcut...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I dont just graphics
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> er use
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i suspect the shortcut specifies which shell, but i don't know for certain
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Yeah if they are running it in a shortcut I definitely agree
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> It would override the users default..
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I need to pull an image and look to know for sure if that is even the default gui term behaviour on these images
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> (with the tweaks/etc)

[Discord] <tenkawa42> Now I'm back and back on the bike again after spending a month over in France 🙂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i haven't touched GNOME in... nearly a decade, and have never touched it on Armbian, but i am working under the presumption that the shortcut on the taskbar sets a specific shell; it may also be a profile inside the terminal itself, does switching to another TTY work as expected?

[Discord] <tenkawa42> inside gnome terminal there should be a settings
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> see if its even hard set there
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> if it is... then that would indicate the profile/shortcut is definitely calling it with that shell
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> possibly in one of the ~/.config files
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I'll startup my VM if its built and look here at generic gnome terminal
<DC-IRC>
