[Discord] <telegraphroad_13842> surely there are significant security benefits from being able to run mainline, in which case it's a significant benefit to businesses that run such hardware

[Discord] <tenkawa42> In general there are no more benefits for that for businesses due to most companies/entitites requirements need for code reviews and standards policies anyways that they would still need to review and have some kind of formal agreement from the end party that provides the technology (in this case the Linux kernel)... Its always been a tricky area in business around the world.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> This is one reason why commercial Unix is still very popular..

[Discord] <mecoblock> How difficult would it be to make an armbian imager 🤔
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> not difficult at all, it's whether there's any actual utility in it - potentially a downstream fork of the RPi imager might work?
<tabris>
How much grief would we get for forking RPi's? It's Apache licensed... I assume the goal would be to run on Windows/Ubuntu, but not intend for any autodetection.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> afaik RPi's doesn't actually do any autodetect, the customisation interface could be useful for replacing the legacy `/root/.not_logged_in_yet` method

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <mecoblock> that’s what I was thinking too
<tabris>
there is some src/embedded/device_info.cpp that uses /proc/cpuinfo, but I don't think I understand *why*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c0rnelius77> Why bother? Just use the RPi imager.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c0rnelius77> Would be nice if there was something easier to use besides `.not_logged_in_yet` which I must say is an odd place for that file to be.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> the "difficulty" of ~~forking~~making one are the windows/macos implementations, and getting the binaries signed so they can run without users having to jump through hoops
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> does _any_ imager support `.zst` compression these days?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> rpi imager has complexity as exposed by Riccardo. I already tried to go that route but eventually dropped the idea. It is cool agree, but is it worth ... dunno.

[Discord] <rpardini> to me, armbian/build _is_ the imager. `CARD_DEVICE=` ftw
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> `EXT=rkdevflash` is handy too
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <mecoblock> 100% but a gui would be nice
