<dery>
holy macaroni ZPAQ never ceases to amaze me
<dery>
its `-m5` option takes _forever_ to compress but I swear it outperforms ANYTHING
<dery>
I swear matt mahoney solved efficient data archival
<midfavila>
oh my god
<midfavila>
i just learned
<midfavila>
apparently international students can study in germany for free
<midfavila>
that's insane
<midfavila>
meanwhile in canada to go to a mediocre at *best* public university *just* tuition is like, over 10kCAD a year
<midfavila>
dude...
<midfavila>
maybe i should move to germany man
<midfavila>
hrmmh...
<dery>
holy based
<midfavila>
the more i learn about other countries the more i realise how much canada sucks
<midfavila>
it's crazy
<midfavila>
qwq
<dery>
remember that there's always the "the grass is always greener at the other side" bias
<midfavila>
my bias is "can i afford food and education"
<dery>
like germany has big issues with their trains I heard and the government either does this based stuff or reconsiders banning adblockers lol
<midfavila>
you say that germany has issues with their trains, and my response is "holy shit germany has *TRAINS*?"
<dery>
fair
<midfavila>
yeah like
<midfavila>
you need to understand
<midfavila>
if you want to go to the next city over in canada
<midfavila>
you *need* a car or a plane ticket
<midfavila>
those are the *only* options almost everywhere in the country
<midfavila>
and even if our passenger rail runs, it can take literally over 24 hours to cover 500km or so
<midfavila>
like if i could make enough money to cover minimal living costs in germany and then get accepted into a public uni and cover the cost of moving all my shit over, i would be *set*
<dery>
yea it really sounds like it
<midfavila>
maybe in a year we'll see
<midfavila>
maybe...
<dery>
wishing you all the best mid

<phoebos>
deutsche bahn is infamous for being unreliable and running late
<phoebos>
but uk trains are just as bad
<sad_plan>
dery: oooh, I wasnt aware
EliSoli has joined #kisslinux
<EliSoli>
is there any free and open-source host for javascript frameworks websites?
<EliSoli>
like, there's vercel, but it is a company
<EliSoli>
where is the kiss website hosted at?
<phoebos>
EliSoli: the community website is hosted on my VPS
<phoebos>
Dylan's is github pages
<midfavila>
phoebos: the uk has trains tho
<midfavila>
i would take shitty trains that exist over shitty trains that don't exist
<phoebos>
of course
<phoebos>
it's crazy how little public transport north america seems to have
<phoebos>
and how far apart things are
<phoebos>
but with uk trains, you book a ticket for like £100 (!) and then it or other trains are delayed so there's more passengers than seats so you're standing for hours. then there's a lack of staff so the train terminates before your stop and you wait another hour for the next one
<midfavila>
phoebos the worst part is that if you try to walk anywhere you're going to be turned into a fine red mist
<midfavila>
if i could at least run to the shops without either a) needing a car or b) playing super suv dodger gaiden i'd be much happier
<midfavila>
:|
<midfavila>
also that still sounds better than the transit system we have, even intracity busses
<midfavila>
not to be playing one-uppance or whatever
<midfavila>
but like in the winter for example it's not uncommon for busses to just
<midfavila>
>not show up
<midfavila>
for hours and hours on end
<midfavila>
i think the record for me is waiting two hours in -50 for a bus last winter
<midfavila>
that fucking sucked
<midfavila>
made me really glad i bought a cloak instead of just a parka
<midfavila>
i just don't understand how it's so dysfunctional. i mean, i do, but it's foolish.
<EliSoli>
i wanna found a small group of devs just like suckless did, but i need a place to host our website, for now it is on vercel.
<phoebos>
midfavila: woof that's bad
<sad_plan>
midfavila phoebos the tube works pretty well though. although its only in london, so cant speak too much of the rest of the UK
<sad_plan>
havent had much complaints about it anyhow, appart from the tube being overly crowded at rush hours....
<midfavila>
phoebos: you have no idea :D
<midfavila>
every day i spend in canada is pain
<sad_plan>
to the extent that if you fall, or you leave your kids in the crowd, consider them gone :p
<sad_plan>
EliSoli: perhaps find devs first, then website?
<midfavila>
open source bike
<midfavila>
made of extruded aluminium tubing
<phoebos>
it's so ugly I love it
<midfavila>
i mean it's very open source-coded
<midfavila>
:P
<sad_plan>
I like when open source makes it way into other aspects of our life :p
<midfavila>
i'm trying to learn more hands-on skills so i can build things from CC'd or CERN schematics
<midfavila>
because frankly at this point it's cheaper in the long run
<midfavila>
than buying things
<midfavila>
also it's nice to be able to build useful things
<midfavila>
even if it's just from a kit
<midfavila>
i guess that's the ikea effect
<midfavila>
hmm

sad_plan: yeah there's already me and a friend, we're looking for devs but it's hard to find good devs with free time, we're looking mainly for beginners rn but we can't find good ones
