<midfavila>
all i want to do is consoom content and these fuckers are making it literally impossible
<midfavila>
all i want to to is doomscroll on my le heckin' *one* subreddit that i can tolerate and the website DOESN'T FUCKING RENDER IN FIREFOX
<midfavila>
*AT ALL*
<midfavila>
then i decide i want to watch a youtube video and the three remaining invidious instances are fucking gatekeeping me with javascript bullshit
<midfavila>
i fucking hate google so much it's unreal
<sad_plan>
you can thank bots and stuff for the javascript requirements. invidious instances has be hammered by this a while back, so they basically had no choice, if they wanted to continue to operate...
<sad_plan>
call it a neccessary evil
<sad_plan>
also if a subreddit doesnt render in firefox, its not firefox's fault, its most likely reddit :p
<sad_plan>
sometimes I even get ip blocket by reddit. but I just need to reload, and its fine all of a sudden
<midfavila>
i just wish people would adhere to open standards instead of doing walled garden shit
<midfavila>
it's so annoying
<midfavila>
just a few years ago i could get away with links and a handful of shell scripts and now i'm back to needing a fucking browser and even then it barely works
<kris_>
reddit and everything else have been working fine for me on librewolf
<kris_>
firefox too for that matter
<kris_>
i dont bother changing any settings on firefox though
<sad_plan>
I agree midfavila. standards are there for a reason, but it doesnt really matter if noone is following them, and its all just a bunch of non-standard shit, and for the web to work, browsers needs to implement unneccessary stuff...
<midfavila>
god and now i'm doing groceries for the month and freaking about that
<midfavila>
haven't touched anything on my usual list since the start of the year and it's up to 600 bucks a month
<midfavila>
all i buy is store brand stuff aa
* midfavila
screams
<midfavila>
the botnet wants me to starve

sad_plan: Have you seen the sponsors of Ladybird? I'm not saying it's a dealbreaker but it's not a good look. Though, I don't know what kind of sponsors would be a good look.

<sad_plan>
I have seen the sponsor list yes. I didnt think much of it. If it doesnt make the software worse, I dont see why this is an issue
<kris_>
spooks me when i see things like that but its probably not the end of the world
<midfavila>
andreas kling how fucking could you
<midfavila>
and now apparently he's planning on porting it to rust
<midfavila>
fucking hell
<midfavila>
time to go to uni and learn to write a fucking browser on my own i guess
<sad_plan>
yeah the rust part I didnt like too much either. but im not supprised really. everyone wanna use these modern safe languages now.. kinda suprised webkit hasnt started using that yet

here's something interesting when making backups with rsync and tar archives. Which one might want to do if the target is an HDD NAS.
<Ozymandias42>
the gzip command has a special flag named --rsyncable which allows the use of rsync's delta algorithm with .tar.gz archives.
<Ozymandias42>
so one could just create a new archive via tar -c source-folder | gzip --rsyncable > output.tar.gz and have that be delta-transferable to an older version on the target storage

oh fuck rossman
<midfavila>
he's trying to monetise FOSS
<midfavila>
le heckin' wholesome repair guy does some good work but monetising foss is bullshit
<midfavila>
people who can pay will
<midfavila>
people who won't will get a copy from those who can
<midfavila>
if you restrict that, it's not libre software any more
<midfavila>
thus the traditional capitalist model of induced scarcity for digital goods is fundamentally incompatible with free software
<midfavila>
you can't split the difference. you need to choose one side or the other.
