<kris_>
midfavila: yeah my void installer uses dialog for everything
<kris_>
it's pretty ok for what it is

<midfavila>
dery: i've used xfs for years instead of extfs which i've basically never used
<midfavila>
xfs is great for plug and play and performs well in most scenarios
<midfavila>
it's also the default FS for a few different distros iirc
<midfavila>
that said, i prefer JFS because it's stupid simple, and NILFS2, because it's also simple and still has something analogous to snapshotting on account of all previous states of the filesystem being kept around until manually trimmed (or trimmed by the daemon)
<midfavila>
kris_: aside from looking at your scripts do you have any good resources for learning the basics of working with dialog or is it sort of a 'figure it the fuck out' thing
<midfavila>
i've poked at dialog without really putting effort into it before and it seemed like a bit of a pain to actually get data *out* of dialog
<midfavila>
oh damn modos' new monitor comes with a colour variant
<midfavila>
i mean it's expensive as hell but still
<midfavila>
720usd...
<midfavila>
but i could have a colour e-ink display in my reform...
<midfavila>
it can go on the list for a far off future project
<midfavila>
oh yeah i've got a pretty decent setup with tofu going btw
<midfavila>
still need to set up a bar and find a way to manage boundaries
<midfavila>
but it's surprisingly comfy
<midfavila>
also thinking about stealing z3bra's ewmh programme from glazier and writing an extension for tofu based on it
<midfavila>
i'm /probably/ going to polish up the base distribution and host it on SDF for ease of access as well
<midfavila>
needs to have documentation and some polish
<kris_>
what tofu
<kris_>
is that a wm
<midfavila>
yes
<midfavila>
written in posix shell
<midfavila>
:D
<kris_>
oh THAT
<kris_>
yeah i remember you mentioning that lmfaoo
<midfavila>
for some reason tofu spawns like a bajillion instances of itself by default so that has to be fixed
<midfavila>
i just added a check to ensure that it doesn't shit out a whole pile of itself if there's already an instance running and that seems to be good enough
<kris_>
that has to be slow as hell
<midfavila>
the bigger issue is that sometimes x11fs just fucking dies
<midfavila>
actually not really
<midfavila>
i mean it's not /amazing/ if you're stress testing it
<midfavila>
but if you're using a reasonably fast shell it's perfectly usable
<midfavila>
and honestly there could be some optimisations made
<midfavila>
like right now the only thing i can think of that causes issues is if you open a shitload of windows and then jiggle your cursor between all of them insanely fast
<midfavila>
then the tracking can be a smidge slow
<kris_>
i would love a wayland wm written in shell
<midfavila>
but you could probably add in some kind of mechanism to stop tracking if there's X number of events per second and then resume once the flow is manageable
<midfavila>
also
<midfavila>
you could probably just use tofu if you reimplemented x11fs as a wayland compositor
<midfavila>
or something
<midfavila>
waylandfs
<midfavila>
wayfs
<midfavila>
that would be an interesting project actually
<midfavila>
if you could maintain the same user-facing API as x11fs or a similar-enough one then you could use tofu with no or few changes
<midfavila>
tofu itself is pretty simple
<midfavila>
x11fs is what does all the actual work
<midfavila>
tofu just applies hooks based on an event stream, really
<midfavila>
and said hooks usually interface with x11fs either directly or via tofu'c control programme tofc
<kris_>
gtx 1650 laptop isnt as low performance as i was expecting
<kris_>
its useless as a laptop but it does run game
<midfavila>
many such cases with gaming laptops
<dery>
midfavila: re XFS that's great to know. I'll switch to it asap then :D
<kris_>
i use xfs on everything its great\
<midfavila>
yeah no complaints
<kris_>
have been for a few years
<midfavila>
xfs just werks
<dery>
lately I've been benchmarking some builds inside a container and god is that doing a crapton of I/O on my ssd just by ccache
<midfavila>
dery no ramdisk?
<dery>
been considering that but it feels safer to not rely on ram
<dery>
yes I also have 32GB of ram
<dery>
tbh I'm not even sure how to configure that from podman lol
<midfavila>
>doesn't even have 64
<midfavila>
ngmi
<dery>
fr
<midfavila>
it's all over
<midfavila>
honestly ecc ram is so cheap compared to non-ecc
<dery>
the funny thing is that my desktop has 16
<kris_>
yeah because fucking nothing supports ecc
<dery>
my laptop is like, officially faster than my desktop in everything except muh gaming
<kris_>
ryzen supports unbuffered ecc but thats the most expensive of the 3
<midfavila>
i've never had an issue finding workstation and server hardware
<midfavila>
lol
<midfavila>
most expensive part on such builds tends to be the mobo
<kris_>
depends
<dery>
makes sense
<kris_>
you can get slop boards on aliexpress
<midfavila>
i just buy stuff from a few gens back on ebay
<midfavila>
it's fine
<midfavila>
never had any issues
<dery>
are they worth it kris_? genuine question
<kris_>
they take working parts from normal like gigabyte/asus/etc boards that are broken and make new mobos out of them in china to resell working parts
<kris_>
super fucking cheap
<dery>
I've seen modest server cpus for nothing online
<kris_>
dery: the motherboards im describing?
<dery>
yea
<midfavila>
yeah you can get xeons for nothing
<kris_>
i mean i would say no but my friend michael who owns one would say yes
<dery>
cause cheap mobo + cheap cpu = almost a working cheap system :D
<midfavila>
bulldozers are even cheaper although at that point you're using bulldozers
<midfavila>
so ymmv
<midfavila>
i've been happy with my piledriver machine
<kris_>
ram is gonna go back down in price soon anyway some new company out of china is making memory chips for specifically normoids like us to buy
<kris_>
theyre already in corsair kits
<midfavila>
yeah i saw that
<dery>
wut fr
<kris_>
yeah fr
<dery>
less goooo
<dery>
we're so back
<midfavila>
china also just made its own 100% domestic gpu
<kris_>
the morethreads gpu? lmao
<dery>
ok I'll stop talking like I never go outside lmfao
<kris_>
a china company also has an x86 license
<kris_>
they have 100% domestic x86 cpus too
<midfavila>
kris_: idk man apparently it's like comparable to 3060s
<kris_>
we're living in the chinese century
<midfavila>
anglo millenium of humiliation
<dery>
fr
* midfavila
inhales
* midfavila
SREAMS
<midfavila>
screams even fuck
<dery>
don't you love competition
<midfavila>
no lol
<dery>
the most capitalistic thing ever that america despises the most
<midfavila>
the "west" deserves everything it gets for trying to "compete"
<dery>
yea fair I wasn't super serious
<dery>
tried to remark how america is "capitalist" and it's being rolled over by a "socialist" country with competition
<midfavila>
yeye
Guest43 has joined #kisslinux
<Guest43>
Ignoring compatibility, would you prefer risc over cisc?
<midfavila>
the mysterious guest returns
<midfavila>
also yes
<dery>
yea
<midfavila>
the second i can get a risc-v cpu in my reform i'm dumping ARM, and the second i can get pioneer boards i'm dumping x86
<dery>
based
<midfavila>
my handheld is already risc
<Guest43>
how is it compatibility wise? in terms of what you can run
<midfavila>
everything i need runs fine
<midfavila>
including reasonably complex software like gcc, emacs, firefox, etc
<midfavila>
i can get X to run too
<Guest43>
i know you don't need much but still it's cool
<Guest43>
oh all that? nice
<midfavila>
also
<midfavila>
box86 has been making crazy progress
<midfavila>
gimme two seconds i'm gonna knock your socks off
<midfavila>
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck i hate youtube so much
<midfavila>
same guy has gotten hades and the witcher 3 to run too
<midfavila>
of course, the latter, uh, *only* ran
<midfavila>
it wasn't playable
<midfavila>
unless you can cope with like 20fps
<midfavila>
but hades was totally playable
<dery>
oh I thought you were gonna link the phone thing
<dery>
this is even cooler
<midfavila>
yeah man
<dery>
but also still think that the phone thing is huge IMO
<midfavila>
it probably uses box64 behind the scenes
<midfavila>
it was originally developed for arm
<dery>
yea
<Guest43>
20 fps is ok
<Guest43>
just look down all the time
<midfavila>
ig it's like, a jit transpiler
<midfavila>
from x86 to other arches
<dery>
I *think* it also did like, library redirection or smth?
<dery>
was it box?
<midfavila>
yeah i think so
<dery>
these are the things that kindle that joy about CS in me
<dery>
(not Counter Strike)
<midfavila>
yeah
<midfavila>
me too
<kris_>
:c
<midfavila>
this is the sort of stuff i'd like to do
<dery>
kris_: that's why I specified xD
<midfavila>
but then you go to uni and it's all llm slop and gamedev and webshit
<kris_>
not been my experience
<dery>
bruh the video says "using Wine"
<midfavila>
dery yeah
<midfavila>
uses wine or proton and dxvk
<dery>
the amount of layers is getting extremely funny
<midfavila>
on box64
<midfavila>
lmao
<midfavila>
kris_: well i'm glad it's worked well for you. i'm hoping that won't be the case when i attend, but most of my irlfrens have complained about it.
<midfavila>
compiled to machine code and then it bootstraps itself
<dery>
there's literally a runtime dir lol
<midfavila>
first boot takes forever tho
<dery>
lmfao even the assembly is inside a lisp file?
<midfavila>
i put it on real hardware and it took like 5 minutes to boot the first time
<dery>
oh
<midfavila>
afterward it was only a couple seconds tho
<dery>
wonder were it caches that
<dery>
but still, cool af
<midfavila>
well, it bootstraps the entire environment from just a few primitives
<midfavila>
then it dumps the state of the memory to a core file
<midfavila>
and then it just
<midfavila>
>loads the entire core file on boot
<midfavila>
the same thing happens with a lot of lisp systems
<midfavila>
s9fes does it, sbcl does it
<midfavila>
a lot of "compiled" lisp is really just dumping the entire environment including a self-contained interpreter into a single portable file
<midfavila>
not always of course
<dery>
I mean if we assume that *everything* is there. Then perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to port?
<dery>
still no idea if there's other platform-specific stuff (there must be) but like, hopefully it's not so bad
<midfavila>
well, i definitely want to tinker with it
<midfavila>
of course, i would prefer if it was written in scheme, but beggars and choosers and all that
<dery>
>Hardware accelerated 3D support via qemu's Virgl device
<dery>
mfw this thing runs accelerated 3d under an emulator
<dery>
let's hope for some nice docs once this thing goes out of the "demo" phase
<dery>
wait last release was 6 years ago
<dery>
but it's still active???
<dery>
wtf
<midfavila>
last commit two weeks
<midfavila>
it died for a while
<dery>
oh
<midfavila>
then the creator dumped a huge pile of patches
<midfavila>
then disappeared again
<midfavila>
and now they're back
<dery>
sounds familiar xD
<midfavila>
hmmmmm
<dery>
well that's great to know actually
<dery>
it's a side project after all
<midfavila>
yeye
<midfavila>
okay back with pizza also
<midfavila>
meatza
<dery>
yayyyy
<midfavila>
yippee
<kris_>
piza
<midfavila>
dery whats ur fave pizza
<dery>
midfavila: I'd say capricciosa
<dery>
I've seen it with some omissions but the version I like is: tomato, mozzarella, salami, ham, artichokes, mushrooms, olives
<dery>
sometimes I've seen it without salami or without ham, for some reason
<dery>
great and works all year round IMO
<dery>
close are sausage and friarielli, very neapolitan, but good friariellis are a thing only in the colder times of the year
<dery>
and also a nice one is one which I've seen many names of: "primavera", "italiana" etc. Means different things in various restaurants but the ingredients are like
<dery>
no sauce, mozzarella and, after baking: prosciutto, arugula, (cherry) tomatoes, parmesan (but like shreds).
<dery>
hella yummy
<dery>
mhhhh now I'm hungry xD
<kris_>
i'm really basic
<kris_>
i just like bog standard pepperoni pizza
<midfavila>
dery consoom pizza
<dery>
it's 8 am mid
<kris_>
but most of the time i make asmongold pizzas
<midfavila>
PIZZA
<kris_>
dery: pizza is breakfast food
<dery>
pizzerias are closed rn
<kris_>
michael wave:
<dery>
I am NOT gonna eat microwave pizza
<dery>
the only kind of breakfast pizza i'll find is more the more bakery kind
<midfavila>
>the humble toaster oven
<kris_>
You appear to think this is a democracy.
<dery>
actually there's a place that sells a banger focaccia
<kris_>
midfavila: you're expecting a professor to know how to use linux
<kris_>
#1 mistake
<midfavila>
pepsi maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
<kris_>
professors are never well versed in their field
<kris_>
ime
<kris_>
literally never
<midfavila>
kris_: i'm expecting the professor to shut the fuck up and fix my grades when i can quote the literal fucking source code to prove them wrong
