<kris_> pretty sick actually
<kris_> apparently all their own stuff

<midfavila> yeah
<midfavila> you know what else is pretty sick
<midfavila> what i'm making for dinner tonight
<kris_> its a burger isnt it
<midfavila> no
<midfavila> it's my attempt to make a "bulgogi bowl"
<midfavila> i had one for the first time the other day and i was kind of blown away
<midfavila> although i'm making a few changes out of necessity and preference
<kris_> first time im hearing of that
<midfavila> quinoa which i've toasted in sesame oil and then steamed, along with one of those asian-style vegetable mixes which is also steamed
<midfavila> and some mince pork because i don't have beef
<midfavila> but it's being fried in a sauce made of uhhh
<midfavila> soya sauce w/ added shiitake, green onions, some beef bouillon (for the beefy flavour), a little honey for caramelisation, ginger, and garlic
<midfavila> brb stove
kris_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<kris_> seems interesting
<kris_> and kinda hard to make
<midfavila> nah
<midfavila> maybe 20 minutes of actual work
<midfavila> tops
<midfavila> the "hardest" part of the whole thing is whipping the ingredients for the sauce together
<midfavila> but i just use pre-puree'd ginger and garlic
<midfavila> so i just threw a few spoonfuls of that in a bowl with some soya sauce, honey, and the other stuff and whipped it together
<midfavila> then the pork has been frying in some spare beef tallow i had (for extra flavour) for the past bit
<midfavila> i've just finished cooking it with the sauce which took maybe five minutes
<midfavila> turned out like a solid 9/10
<midfavila> as for the veggies and quinoa i just rinsed the quinoa and then threw it all in my rice cooker
<midfavila> oop food is done
<midfavila> oh yeah this is going on the menu
<midfavila> i'm glad i made extra sauce
<kris_> when are you gonna open a restaurant
<midfavila> i'm not good enough at cooking to open a restaurant lmao
<midfavila> and anyway i would rather do some stuff with the local community kitchen
<midfavila> what i would love to see is the creation of like
<midfavila> a "free cafe"
<midfavila> that can be run by the local food not bombs chapter and everyone can just eat there for free
<midfavila> or at-cost
<midfavila> something like this
<kris_> that would be pretty cool
<kris_> at-cost would be nice im tired of how expensive food is
<midfavila> yeah you're fucking telling me x-x
<midfavila> did i mention it's at the point where it's cheaper for me to just eat at buffets literally every day than cook at home
<kris_> i remember you mentioning that before i got banished to the shadow realm i think
<midfavila> a basic grocery run for the month is ~=CAD600
<midfavila> if i were to eat at the local uni it's 15-20 bucks a day depending on whether i go for breakfast or lunch
fultilt has joined #kisslinux
<midfavila> and they run five days a week for lunch plus breakfast on weekends
<kris_> see thats insane to me
<midfavila> so it's really quite competitive considering like
<kris_> a single individual small slice of mediocre ass pizza is like $6 at my uni
<midfavila> i'm eating much much better at the cafeteria
<midfavila> like it's 14 bucks and you can eat however much you want of their meats, fruits, vegetables, whatever
<midfavila> fresh bread and bagels
<midfavila> everything
<midfavila> versus 600 bucks a month to live on oatmeal and mincemeat
<midfavila> tbh if i could like
<midfavila> help establish a commune here that's actually viable i would consider my life a success
<midfavila> like get all of the different organisations here that provide services and shit to pool their resources, buy a building or otherwise (legally) acquire one, and then just like
<midfavila> idk set up some barracks and spend the day just doing shit for people idk
<midfavila> stuff
<kris_> yeah that would be more impact than 99% of people will ever have
<kris_> positive or negative
<midfavila> maybe
<midfavila> you know what
<midfavila> some sweet and spicy tofu would go well with this
<midfavila> fried up nice and crispy
<midfavila> speaking of which
<midfavila> something i learned today
<midfavila> apparently the section of society that's terrified of soybeans has now evolved to being terrified of eating vegetables in general
<midfavila> kris_ you're hip with the youth is this true
<kris_> idfk i dont talk to people
<kris_> i didnt know people were terrified of soybeans
<midfavila> yeah illiterate morons a few years ago were screeching about muh soy
<midfavila> muh phytoestrogens
<midfavila> if you eat tofu you're going to instantly wake up wearing skirts and thigh highs
<midfavila> because i guess they flunked high school bio and chem
<kris_> nah that only happens if you install arch
<midfavila> idk i installed arch and didn't get my complimentary programmer socks
<midfavila> then again i also jumped ship to crux like a week later because arch fucking sucks
<kris_> sorry version 2 of my statement just released
<kris_> that happens if you install arch and like it
<midfavila> damn
<kris_> i'm known as a goalpost mover
<midfavila> domain expander
<gentoouser1337> how is crux?
<midfavila> crux is fine
<gentoouser1337> never used it
<midfavila> kiss is better
<kris_> its ok
<kris_> they have a lot of packages tho
<midfavila> i can't actually fathom using anything other than kiss at this point as my main system
<midfavila> or like something similar to it
<midfavila> SHIT THAT REMINDS ME I NEED TO FINISH MY DISTREO
<midfavila> fhidsgfshdh friefhured
<midfavila> i haven't touched it in like a fucking week holy SHIT dude
<kris_> i dont feel like doing literally anything right now idk whats going on
<kris_> i find it difficult to even watch a youtube video or show or movie right now
<midfavila> idk everything sucks and it's hard to feel motivation these days
<midfavila> i literally haven't gotten out of bed for anything over the past week
<kris_> this is just today for me i'm just like exhausted or something
<midfavila> not even metaphorically
<stilic> I'm making my own distro
<midfavila> aside from like what's necessary to not die i guess
<midfavila> i'm just bluuuuh
<midfavila> stilic: very cool :3
<kris_> im trying to get myself back into the flow after dealing with babysitting a genuine actual sociopath 8 hours a day all week
<midfavila> what are you doing with it? or is it just an lfs setup kinda thing?
<kris_> i'm about to move from rtorrent to qbittorrent on my torrent VM
<kris_> i hate to do it but it has to be done
<kris_> ive had it
<midfavila> >he doesn't use btpd
<midfavila> btpd is so cool but it's also so fucking poorly written
<stilic> midfavila: for now it's a package builder written in Lua
<midfavila> and not like in the sense of it's shit
<midfavila> per se
<kris_> qbit devs clearly dont care about security but rtorrent devs clearly don't care about it working
<midfavila> but it uses muh clever tricks and it's stupid
<kris_> or ig dev
<kris_> rtorrent has this stupid issue where if my network goes out, it just dies until it's restarted
<midfavila> like iirc the entirety of btpd operates on the stack
<kris_> so i have to check it daily to make sure my stuff is still seeding
<midfavila> zero malloc
<midfavila> which is cool
<midfavila> and yeah it has benefits
<midfavila> but also what the actual fuck why are you doing it like that
<stilic> but per my requirements for full source bootstrap, I also made a full source bootstrap project for kiss https://codeberg.org/leanix/maintainer-utils#kiss-bootstrap
<midfavila> it makes it unnecessarily complicated to just drop in and work on things
<midfavila> whoa
<midfavila> that's pretty cool stilic
<kris_> i looked into guix again and it still wont do certain things i need it to do and honestly im a bit put off by the community
<kris_> the community on IRC seems cool but i talked to some people who use it on discord the other day and ive never seen a more insufferable group
<kris_> even the nixos people arent as bad
<midfavila> stilic: i might steal ur bootstrap
<kris_> also yes very cool stilic
<midfavila> kris_: your first mistake was using dick sored
<kris_> no choice
<midfavila> always a choice
<midfavila> man
<midfavila> you know what
<kris_> hey at least discord doesnt block vpns like fucking liberachat
<midfavila> semi-related
<midfavila> i've been thinking lately about how much the state of the net fucking blows in terms of IMs and shit like that
<midfavila> like
<midfavila> on the one hand
<midfavila> IRC and shit is pretty dead
<midfavila> on the other hand
<midfavila> discord and telegram and all that other shit makes me want to fucking shoot myself
<midfavila> like why can't cool people just exist
<midfavila> and not use that shit
<kris_> IRC is a lot more alive than discord
<kris_> that sounds stupid but let me explain
<midfavila> idk about that one there's like 1k people on here and most of them lurk lol
<midfavila> ultimately people just need to be cooler >:C
<kris_> i have a reasonable level of confidence that when i talk to people on here they're not going to basically be on autopilot and just regurgitate what their favorite linux tuber said
<kris_> the culture around the two platforms is totally different
<midfavila> yeah no 100%
<kris_> i dont consider discord to be alive when the people there basically aren't
<midfavila> but the ratio of irc to discord is far too low
<stilic> midfavila: what's your distro project about btw?
<kris_> which is horrendously egotistical of me to say but still
<midfavila> stilic it's my computer autism hugbox
<midfavila> kris_: no you're 100% right
<midfavila> discord and telegram et al are full of braindead morons
<kris_> im not convinced they arent LLMs
<midfavila> no they're just stupid
<stilic> midfavila: do you have a repo?
<kris_> you can legitimately prompt inject these people
<midfavila> i'm not even going to say i'm *not* stupid
<midfavila> but like holy fuck just
<midfavila> fghjndhikjfgriejtfriehaifhkgjresdihkjlbgdkjnflgnklsdfkjlbnfgewkjlbfgbnihreihkjlbfgrebgreiphgipuhbeiphgbreiphkjbgr
<midfavila> AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
<midfavila> *AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*
<midfavila> like you know what i mean???
<kris_> i just have a small discord of 40 friends ive met in different places and i'm a bit of a dictator
<midfavila> stilic: atm no
<kris_> people dont get invited unless i agree to it
<midfavila> once i have something resembling a usable alpha i'll post it
<kris_> or well
<kris_> i have to fundamentally be okay with the person people want to add + they have to vote on it
<kris_> i don't get to just invite people either despite being the owner
<stilic> midfavila: what tooling does it have
<kris_> if most people say no then thats that but if i say no then that's the end of it if that makes sense
<kris_> its odd but for some reason it works
<midfavila> >i'm sort of a dictator but also things are run by vote
<midfavila> how dictatory of you
<midfavila> asking people's opinions
<midfavila> smdh
<kris_> it's half ran by votes
<kris_> if i say no then that means no
<midfavila> stilic: in what sense
<stilic> midfavila: what is used to generate packages and such
<midfavila> oh
<midfavila> plain shell scripts
<stilic> midfavila: damn
<midfavila> it's basically a stripped-down KISS package format
<kris_> i need to fork runit
<midfavila> and i have some shell routines that package the resulting build up for use with z3bra's pm(1)
<stilic> kris_: nitro when it exists
<midfavila> but i don't like pm(1) because it really should just be written in shell
<stilic> midfavila: I see
<kris_> i'm aware of nitro
<kris_> i feel like it would be moderately easy to add a depends system to runit
<kris_> an actual one
<stilic> yea
<stilic> but maybe it's best to use nitro as a base? I dunno
<kris_> busyboxs runit is extremely clean
<kris_> i don't particularly care about using it to actually bring up the system
<midfavila> >not using a shell script that launches other shell scripts as an init system
<midfavila> very sad
<kris_> yeah because i care about having actual service supervision
<kris_> which runit already provides
<midfavila> slackware monitors services:3
<kris_> you're a slackware
<midfavila> i do strive to embody the notion of slack yes
<stilic> I hate writing code for package dependency management
<stilic> this is garbage and i hate garbage
<midfavila> just don't manage dependencies
<midfavila> ez
<kris_> you really really are a slakcware
<kris_> i need to get a datavac type thing
<kris_> tiny vacuum cleaner for my stuff
<stilic> midfavila: except I need them because my system requires all deps to be declared for the sandbox to load them
<kris_> im tired of using compressed air
<kris_> >apk add qbittorrent-nox
<kris_> >Need to download 114.6 MiB of packages.
<kris_> dang
<stilic> kris_: which distro is that
<kris_> alpine
<stilic> I see
<kris_> generally i run void on bare metal and alpine for all of my VMs that do various things
<kris_> void/alpine/openbsd are the only things i use at the moment
<stilic> really good distro but they did some bs with their "ai" policy and now Ariadne is looking to build her own distro
<kris_> yeah i saw
<stilic> kris_: I run a Gentoo-based distro
<kris_> but i also kinda agree more with natanael
<kris_> it's all in execution
<kris_> i am REALLY hoping the quality of alpine doesn't tank hard because he's basically said it's fine as long as shit's audited
<stilic> kris_: well that's the issue
<stilic> it's only the council and ncopa pushing for that
<stilic> everyone else said no
<kris_> i'm not diametrically opposed to AI use like everyone else seems to be
<kris_> i guess we'll see, if the quality eats shit like everything else has then i'll hop
<stilic> I'm in a irc community which has a strong focus on noAI stuff https://starlightnet.work/
<kris_> gotta love my internet randomly dying
<kris_> my ISP is legitimately awful
<kris_> stilic: very neat
<kris_> i guess for me it kinda depends on how it's being used
<kris_> i don't like seeing LLMs author commits, i don't like seeing AI have a heavy handed involvement
<kris_> at the same time, pretending they aren't useful to some degree is illogical to me
<kris_> i could sleep on a fence
<kris_> i use LLMs pretty often personally just to find information on things because there's not a decent search engine left
<kris_> searxng is OK
<kris_> not good though
<stilic> kris_: I think there might be usecases but ppl acting like they literally need it like drugs is so bad omfg
<kris_> as with everything there's levels to it
<kris_> i ran my own here at home for a while just to pass things i write over to so it can look it over, id say a good 80% of what it pointed out was stuff i legitimately had overlooked
<stilic> alr
<kris_> other 20% was shit it just made up
<stilic> I'm pretty anti-GenAI so far but I still think there might be usecases for llms
<midfavila> kris_ stilic tbf i do track deps but it's just using tsort
<kris_> i think letting it actually engineer stuff is stupid and dangerous, and obviously there's the environmental impact
<stilic> like light code completion
<stilic> midfavila: tsort?
<kris_> i don't like code completion at all because i feel like it prevents me from getting "fully involved"
<midfavila> posix utility that implements a topological sort
<kris_> i'm not sure how to word this, if i'm not completely and entirely conscious of everything then it prevents me from flowing
<stilic> kris_: yep, that's the breaking point for me as well
<midfavila> well, i'm looking *into* using tsort
<stilic> midfavila: it's standard IG?
<midfavila> atm i just naively load everything listed in every package's 'depends' file into a single list, then reverse that
<midfavila> yes it is
<kris_> time to see if qbittorrent accepts RSA8096 for local https certs
<stilic> midfavila: does it support multiple build stages for cases like "I need GCC from stage 1 to build GCC of stage 2"
<midfavila> no
<midfavila> that gets handled by the individual package's build script
<midfavila> i'm pretty sure the only thing i have that needs a multi-stage build is gcc actually
<midfavila> and i'm just using a modified version of kiss' build script for that
<midfavila> the *ultimate* goal is to get rid of gcc and binutils entirely
<midfavila> and also gnu make and linux
<kris_> it does indeed support RSA8096
<kris_> coolio
<stilic> midfavila: cool
<stilic> I think a multi-stage is needed since otherwise, you still depend on the host distro
<midfavila> yah
<midfavila> also kris_ i think i'm going to wait on the uni thing
<midfavila> planning on starting january instead of rushing through everything to start in september
<kris_> makes sense to me
<midfavila> gives me time to make some money too
<midfavila> damn i suddenly have an intense desire for soda
<midfavila> kris_: have you ever done that thing where you mix club soda with like
<midfavila> those uh
<midfavila> "water flavourers"
<midfavila> you know the little squeeze bottle thingies
<kris_> i dont know what club soda is
<kris_> but ive never put water flavoring into soda
<midfavila> carbonated water
<kris_> oh interesting
<kris_> that's not a bad idea really
<midfavila> it's not
<kris_> actually that's kind of a banger idea
<midfavila> much cheaper than zevia
<kris_> the energy mixture garbage i buy is just water flavoring because it works and is cheap
<kris_> ive been just putting it in normal water
<kris_> it would be nice carbonated
<midfavila> i'mjust thinking about like
<midfavila> having carbonated lemonade
<midfavila> or iced tea
<midfavila> or like, pomegranate "juice"
<midfavila> etc
<kris_> stilic: where did you see that ariadne is working on her own? i know she threatened it but i wasn't sure she had actually decided to do it
<kris_> midfavila: tea is always good
<kris_> i drink a stupid amount of tea
<midfavila> i think i drink at least 2-3L of tea a day
<kris_> the kids have gotten me into it again
<kris_> the one that fried my laptop drinks some sort of like chinese default tea
<kris_> i forget what it's called, havent tried it yet
<midfavila> i keep trying to drink coffee but most coffee is too like
<midfavila> "intense"
<kris_> i have some chamomile in the cabinet but i also have not tried that
<midfavila> if that makes sense
<kris_> i get it
<midfavila> yeah
<midfavila> like it has a lot of flavour but it's all very tip-of-the-tongue sort of thing
<kris_> the coffee i used to get tasted identical to black tea
<kris_> just higher caffeine content
<midfavila> it just smacks you in the face and then that's it
<midfavila> whereas tea is like, a more balanced flavour
<kris_> you just need to find the right coffee
<midfavila> nah this is just a coffee thing
<kris_> i wish i could find what i got specifically that i kept buying, there's a specific place i got coffee beans from
<midfavila> i mostly drink light and medium roasts and i've tried a few different types
<midfavila> that said,
<kris_> i got way too into it at one point, had a really nice grinder and an aeropress and shit
<midfavila> i did try this brand of coffee from turkey recently
<midfavila> and it's pretty good
<midfavila> has cardamom and other spices mixed in
<kris_> i dont drink coffee anymore though i would rather the flavor of most teas
<kris_> and coffee isnt strong enough to actually do anything to me
<kris_> especially given caffeine doesnt work for me
<kris_> its the other shit in the stuff i drink that does
<midfavila> actually
<midfavila> dery: is "italian soda" an actual thing in italy
<midfavila> i might try to replicate them using club soda
<midfavila> okay no they're apparently an italian-american thing
<midfavila> hrm
<midfavila> the more you know
<kris_> OH
<kris_> HOLY SHIT
<midfavila> nani
<kris_> midfavila: i really wanted to tell you about this but couldnt because i got sent to the shadow realm but like
<kris_> i got my website building entirely with emacs now, no hugo
<kris_> using org -> html stuffs
<midfavila> very cool
<kris_> it looks very close to identical
<midfavila> i need to rewrite my website in troff or something
<midfavila> i would use werc but p9fus pisses me off
<kris_> i havent pushed it to cloudflare yet because im not sure if i really want to use this but it works better than hugo does
<kris_> it just feels icky to me to use emacs for anything other than editing text
<midfavila> y
<kris_> though this is kinda technically sorta text editing
<midfavila> emacs isn't even really a text editor
<kris_> i dont know it just does, i like to have tools for specific tasks
<midfavila> it's just a mediocre lisp machine
<kris_> i know it isnt
<kris_> and it drives me insane
<midfavila> you can always use acme
<midfavila> :3c
<kris_> though my emacs is preeeeetty stripped down
<kris_> which took like 4 days to do
<midfavila> tbh i like acme a lot except for the whole mouse focus thing
<kris_> i've dubbed this the autism monolith
<kris_> there's still more stuff i can remove but meh
<midfavila> have you seen these
<midfavila> ?
<kris_> i haven't
<kris_> only editors ive liked enough to really try to use long term are emacs and vis
<midfavila> these are vi clones with the acme model for extensibility
<kris_> non vi/vim keybinds = immediate no for me
<kris_> not because others are worse but because ive been hitting the same keys for like 15 years and don't intend on changing
<midfavila> that's fair
<midfavila> re: vi tho i wish people would stop screeching about how amazing it is re: keybinds and shit
<midfavila> vi is literally the way it is because of the constraints of the terminal it was implemented on
<midfavila> that's it
<kris_> they're nonsensical to me
<kris_> still are
<midfavila> they are
<midfavila> vi is an exercise in compromise
<kris_> most of my "actual editor binds" in emacs are ones ive defined myself largely based on what doom does with its spacebar leader keys
<kris_> for like
<kris_> window management and shit
<midfavila> that's not even an opinion, that's an objective fact
<kris_> the actual text editing happens with evil mode though
<midfavila> the whole hjkl thing is because the og terminal didn't have a nav cluster for example
<kris_> emacs' binds drive me batshit
<midfavila> emacs binds are comfy
<midfavila> ed's editing language plus emacs' line editing commands is peak comfy
<kris_> probably comes natural to british tea consumers
<kris_> where's eva
<midfavila> the gremlin hasn't been sighted in quite some time
<kris_> also i dont use hjkl it feels uncomfortable as fuck to me
<midfavila> it is
<midfavila> lol
<kris_> the order is incorrect
<kris_> i just use my arrow keys
<midfavila> only home row chuds like hjkl
<kris_> i was never taught to type i just figured it out so home row has never been a thing for me
<midfavila> cringe home row versus chad wasd kings
<kris_> funny thing too given i probably type a fair bit faster than most people
<midfavila> learn to type by shit-talking people without using a mic in shooters
<stilic> kris_: can't find it but you can see what she's doing on her fedi acc
<kris_> i'm still trying to break 200wpm
<kris_> dont think i can do it on this keyboard
<kris_> close tho
<midfavila> do you use qwerty?
<kris_> yessir
<midfavila> neat
<midfavila> i think i'm around 130wpm?
<midfavila> ~=99%
<midfavila> which is fine
<kris_> i get a lot faster when i have keys with less travel and less resistance
<kris_> that and qwerty is honestly a little limiting
<kris_> feels that way anyway
<kris_> also yeah 130 is totally fine
<kris_> midfavila: ad might be kinda cool
<kris_> id like to have vis but looks and feels like my emacs
<kris_> which is doable but i cba to write a ton of plugins
<midfavila> tbh i just want edit but ed
<midfavila> ed is comfy
<midfavila> btw kris_ did you see that ebike thing i posted in here a while ago
<midfavila> i figured you were lurking the logs
<kris_> i did see that
<kris_> i thought i replied to it but you may have been offline
<midfavila> probably
<midfavila> sdf has been experiencing a lot of blackouts lately
<kris_> it looks kinda silly
<midfavila> does it?
<kris_> it also looks cheap to manufacture though so
<kris_> FUCKING $4700??
<midfavila> idk dude compared to a rinky dink little jetson or w/e those tiny e-bikes are this one would be more useful lol
<midfavila> ugh the frame i want is like 1500 bucks after currency conversion...
fultilt has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<dery> midfavila: what in italian soda
<dery> we got like "soda" which is water with... something
<dery> it's also called "acqua tonica"... i think?
<dery> nope it's not that
<kris_> dery: no way hi
<dery> hiiiiiii
<dery> hyd krissss
<dery> glad to see you back
<kris_> im ok, and yeah im back until liberachat also blocks tor
<kris_> how are you
<dery> going forwards
<dery> trying to remember i'm still human
<dery> should socialize more
<kris_> relatable
<kris_> do you hang out with anyone irl
<dery> rarely
<dery> local LUG helps
<kris_> you should ask some people there if they wanna hang out extra
<kris_> like external to lug mettings
<kris_> meetings
<dery> that's a good idea
