Why-oh-why does the USB-HID standard have to be such a mess? (I'm still wresting with building a working penti firmware for a hardware keyboard).

It is all fine and dandy, as long as you only want to send ascii characters. But once you want an umlaut, you have the choice to either send it as the "positionally equivalent key on the US keyboard" and hope that the OS happens to map it correctly, or send it from the "Unicode Usage Page" and hope that the host even implements that.

Maybe I'll just implement both and add an extra arpeggio to switch between those two modes.
