<dicot> I just found out I'm several major versions behind. Should I upgrade one-by-one or just jump to the latest?

<lebot> <chewitt> it depends on the version jumps
<lebot> <chewitt> the core OS will update to any new version just fine
<lebot> <chewitt> but there are some major changes that impact add-ons in the recent-ish past
<lebot> <chewitt> and those can either dictate a clean install or some prep. beforehand
<lebot> <chewitt> so, what’s the starting version
<lebot> <chewitt> ?
<dicot> I'm on 10.0.4
<dicot> and x86_64
<dicot> I don't rely a whole lot on add-ons. I wouldn't mind doing a clean install and rescanning my library if that's faster.
<chewitt> changes to Kodi scrapers since 10.0 will result in a rescan anyway, plus the python3 change, and maybe arm>aarch64 depending on what hw you have
<chewitt> no arch change on x86_64 tho :)
<dicot> That'd be booting from an installer USB, right? With the usb creator
<chewitt> nah, the syslinux version hasn't changed in many years
<chewitt> so just stop kodi, move /storage/.kodi to /storage/.kodi-old, then wget the .tar update file to /storage/.update and reboot
<chewitt> it will update and first-run a clean install
<chewitt> then just stop kodi, move or copy essential files back to where they need to be, restart kodi
<chewitt> it's prob just sources.xml that contains much useful
<chewitt> possibly some items in /storage/.kodi/userdata/addon_data/
<dicot> okay, it sounds straightforward until the 'essential files'. What would I miss if I fuck up there?
<chewitt> nothing
<chewitt> because all you do is stop kodi, put the right file in the right place, restart kodi
<chewitt> sources/passwords/guidettings.xml
<dicot> =) Okay. Thanks for the support. I'll give it a shot.
<chewitt> perhaps a keyboard.xml file if you ever had reason to remap keys or such
<chewitt> it's usually faster to recreate/redo a small number of things than copying everything over and then try to clean up the cruft you didn't need
<dicot> I found libreelec quite usable out of the box, really. Dump my movies into a folder, scan it, and it's all there.
<chewitt> I understand the appeal of flashy skins and such
<chewitt> but over time the novelty of reconfiguring test kit all the time with lots of settings wears off
<chewitt> so me (and most staff) typically have very 'out of box' configs that require little effort
<chewitt> the more you change, the higher the probability of something wasting your time
<chewitt> kodi does not police its content well though, so the occasional 'nuke and pave' is never a bad thing

<yang3> Hello, I am interested which methods, beside CEC can be used as a remote controller for LE ?
<yang3> and can any of these be activated through shell?
<yang3> Another question is can 12.0.0 (RPi4.aarch64) be upgraded directly to LE 12.2 Omega?
<yang3> and the third question would be, can I somehow see the KODI screen in a local Linux Desktop environment (not over HDMI as intended)?
<yang3> Currently I don't have access to a widescreen LCD monitor
<yang3> ok , I have answered myself to the second question, regarding manual upgrade
