<janrinze> gatecat: for a while now I have been using openxc7 version of nextpnr-xilinx. Most of the issues I bump into are related to things already fixed in yosysHQ version of the frontend. How realistic is it to port the fixes from yosysHQ into openxc7? I'm willing to try merging the fixes but I think you are most experienced in these matters and can advise me well on this.

<lofty[m]> janrinze: if it was feasible, they would have merged nextpnr-xilinx into the YosysHQ upstream.
<somlo> last time I inquired, nextpnr-xilinx was obsoleted/superseded by nextpnr-himbaechel
<janrinze> lofty[m]: I can understand that the two projects have diverged. What I need is the fixes from the frontend. If those could be ported to openxc7 then it might solve my current issues.
<janrinze> somlo: I don't think that nextpnr-himbaechel is doing xilinx yet. There was some remarks on it being very experimental a.t.m. and lacking some features.
<janrinze> lofty[m]: the issue i am running into is a bug in merge_nets() which stumbles over some very strange out_of_range errors that don't happen with the same design built with nextpnr-ecp5 built from yosysHQ. (same design but different target FPGA)
<somlo> janrinze: quoting and paraphrasing gatecat from memory (with apologies if I misunderstood anything), nextpnr-xilinx is an "evolutionary dead end", any xilinx-specific progress will come from himbaechel
<somlo> I did manage to get himbaechel to produce a working arty blinky bitstream
<somlo> sadly, I haven't to date gotten a large enough chunk of contiguous time to wrap my head around all the moving parts, so I can't offer any useful technical help

<janrinze> somlo: openxc7 forked nextpnr-xilinx around 2020 i guess. they have done their own patches and development but did not keep up with yosysHQ.
<janrinze> somlo: gatecat has the most knowlegde i.h.m.o. The work on nextpnr-xilinx from gatecat's github has stopped quite some time ago and I can understand that it took too much energy to keep it afloat while diverging from the work at yosysHQ. The hope is still that nextpnr-himbaechel will get the attention but not in the near future. (I can relate being swamped in work and not enough energy to work on open-source projects.) OpenXC7 has built u
<janrinze> pon the work from gatecat and is still getting patches.
<janrinze> oops i.h.m.o -> i.m.h.o. :-D
