So ti-linux-firmware provides only binaries for TI's EVMs (because for example there is the power-off sequence), but OTOH that repository is hardcoded in buildroot (I guess yocto too, but there it should be easier to overlay it with some custom recipe). Correct? So there is no viable way to support custom boards in buildroot (for now).

Are there any plans to move away from board specific firmwares to SoC specific ones?

mwalle: the original intent was to just have a uC that is SoC specific that only does DM. that did not withstand pressures from customers in general since they wanted addtional functionality on the firmware.. this is probably why board specific firmware is what we see now
