<_talibanana_> I heard about this server from a comment section on instagram talking about sum conspiracy regarding Jane Street 😂 and I realised I'll probably need to be in this server if I wanna break into Jane Street

<yawaramin> hello! i don't think you need to be in this server to get into Jane Street 🤷♂️
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> No but I might need to be in this server to learn OCaml 😭
<discocaml>
<jalsol> I don't think you need to know OCaml to get into Jane Street

<_talibanana_> Oh but it'd give me an edge in my application for internships next year right? As of now I only know python
<companion_cube>
not really, they interview in python just fine
<companion_cube>
@edhebi it's not great to embed OCaml, the runtime is not reentrant (unlike say lua)

<jalsol> no not at all, I used C++ and did manage to get to the very last interview round
<discocaml>
<jalsol> they test your problem solving skills and not so much the tools you use
<discocaml>
<christopherfujino> I've been using ounit2 for unit testing, but when I considered filing a feature request, I realize it hasn't been committed to in 2 years. is there a more up to date unit testing project, or should i just roll my own? (in case it matters, the feature I want is better output formatting to match whatever vim parses from it's makeprg

<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> Yeah but the problem solving part's not something I'm all too worried about, but without lack of relevant coding experience by next year (outside of a market prediction model me and 3 friends are going to do this summer if we decide to lock in)(and also for whenever I decide to start doing leetcode challenges) won't I be at a disadvantage?
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> So if I get accepted into an internship despite only knowing python I'll be taught OCaml on the job? Also I should really sleep, it's almost half past 3 in the morning
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> Also also that's a big if ^ 😂
<discocaml>
<dyslexicsteak> companies train employees you aren't expected to know everything when you walk in
<discocaml>
<dyslexicsteak> i don't know if they'd take your word for it if you said you knew it already
<discocaml>
<jalsol> yes, they kinda do this if you read their blogs
<discocaml>
<yawaramin> check out the Jane Street Tech Blog, they do a deep dive on developer training
<discocaml>
<dyslexicsteak> but knowing it will help you more than anything
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> I suppose so. Still, it'd be nice to have an extra language to put on my technical skills section on my CV 😭 especially since OCaml is definitely quicker at executing code than Python in almost all cases
<discocaml>
<dyslexicsteak> i don't see how execution speed factors in but yes i guess sure if you want to list it
<discocaml>
<yawaramin> for better output formatting, i think some kind of expect testing makes sense. dune has some support built-in
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> The only time I interact with Jane Street is if I'm talking to one of them sponsor fellas from Jane Street when my friends are tryna secure funding 💀 I don't read their blogs or anything
<discocaml>
<yawaramin> reading their blogs will probably be more helpful for getting an internship than learning OCaml tbh
<discocaml>
<jalsol> their questions are pretty much puzzles and not too DSA heavy
<discocaml>
<jalsol> but you need to know DSA at a certain level to judge performance
<discocaml>
<jalsol> they emphasize on problem solving and maybe some bits of design
<discocaml>
<Kali> what's DSA?
<discocaml>
<jalsol> data structures and algorithms
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> Wouldn't this only be true for like the first round or 2 of interviews though right? After that it'd become more technical. I'm hoping to get into a student led quant firm at my uni (meant to be a mock firm but we got money from all our quant sponsors to actually put into stocks cuz our union wouldn't give us money to "gamble") and I suppose if I don't need to know OCaml for internships then the rest of the technical skills I'll pick up s
<discocaml>
<_talibanana_> But I'll stick in the server regardless just to learn
<discocaml>
<jalsol> right, the very last round for me was a pretty interesting algorithm, but there's no way anyone could prepare it anyway
<discocaml>
<jalsol> they gave me a rough idea of what the algorithm does and I had to implement it
<discocaml>
<jalsol> I forgot to mention that even when the interviews focus on problem solving, they do expect candidates to follow good programming practices
<discocaml>
<jalsol> pretty much a given but still
