<netbsduser``>
materials about the wonderfully ambitious OZIX operating system that was to replace ULTRIX
<netbsduser``>
almost every element of its architecture was quite bizarre and extremely ambitious
<netbsduser``>
there is freely available source code to at least one of its elements! it had an unconventional division of labour around the file system
<netbsduser``>
and there is clear evidence that tru64's advfs is in fact a descendent of OZIX's I/O subsystem
<netbsduser``>
advfs is now GPL and i can best describe it as something that prefigured ZFS in architecture in a lot of ways
<netbsduser``>
(the OZIX technical summary also describes what sound a lot like DTrace and the solaris fault management architecture - it could be pure coincidence but it's interesting solaris 10 had 3 OZIX-like subsystems)
<kof673>
In a 2023 interview, Dave Cutler said of the project: "MICA was wildly ambitious, ... at the level of ambition of Multics. If we had ever built it, probably no one would have ever bought it, but it had a lot of good ideas in it."
