<gbrlsnchs> If I were to develop a WM using the new protocol, would running river—built from the correct branch—nested in a working compositor work well for this purpose? I want to get my hands dirty, I just don't know where to start 😅
<LarstiQ> gbrlsnchs: I believe so!

<gbrlsnchs> Is https://github.com/Supreeeme/xwayland-satellite compatible with river? I like the idea of a decoupled Xwayland implementation, and I wonder if this would help taking some pressure off of river contributors when maintaining Xwayland stuff

<leon-p> it should be, but I would be surprised if it worked as good as having Xwayland built-in
<gbrlsnchs> leon-p: I only tested it while giving niri a go; worked pretty well for the gaming session I had

<smoon23> Same. xwayland-satellite on Niri worked equally well as the built-in xwayland support in River for me. I was not able to notice any difference. I don't use many applications requiring X though.

<leon-p> for modern, "well-behaved" X programs there likely won't be a differnece. But basically everything that (ab)uses override redirect windows probably will not work
