jamrial: The AVFilterLink documentation contains the following: "Applications must not normally access the link structure directly. Use the buffersrc and buffersink API instead. In the future, access to the header may be reserved for filters implementation." Has been added by NG in 485617ea0f7bfe. The "must not normally" is strange; is French a language in which the negation of (the French word for) must has the meaning that

<Lynne>
I thought they still didn't have a way of going from video to film grain model
<Lynne>
a non-insignificant portion of pirate av1 rips online have just simple photon noise FGMs, which is upsetting to see since all it does is waste power to add noise that dithering will swamp out anyway
<quietvoid>
more flexible than the photon stuff but doesn't really represent the whole video
<Lynne>
it's better than nothing
<Lynne>
I wonder if its possible to rip out film grain parameters from film grain emulation programs for popular film types

<Lynne>
hollywood has spent millions emulating film grain since shooting in digital became popular
<BtbN>
I never quite understood why
<BtbN>
What's bad about clear footage?
<Lynne>
adobe premiere film grain emulation plugin licenses cost thousands
<Lynne>
"feel"
<BtbN>
The same "feel" that makes people go crazy about 24 fps I guess
<Lynne>
ugh, yes
<Lynne>
you can shoot in 30fps with 1/48 shutter and few would notice that it isn't 24fps in a cinema
<Lynne>
but you'd instantly tell on a 60hz monitor because there's no judder, and only that
<Lynne>
I think part of the appeal of film grain insertion on digital footage is that simply put, modern lighting trends make the image look very flat these days
