<johnjaye> on this post it's talking about encoding options for h264. What does this part mean in reference to two-pass encoding? "if output quality from frame to frame is of less importance"

<kepstin> on what post? what is being compared to?
<kepstin> "output quality from frame to frame" is also somewhat subjective
<kepstin> (and which encoder are you talking about)
<kepstin> alright, so for x264
<kepstin> i think that statement is rather misleading, tbh
<kepstin> with x264, crf and two-pass mode generally provide the most consistent visual quality over the file
<johnjaye> ok. it seemed confusing to me
<kepstin> also there's no significant difference between crf mode and 2-pass abr mode in frame-to-frame or scene-to-scene output quality.
<YUiNA> i thought 2pass was essentially just picking the optimal crf value on pass 1 and using it on pass 2
<YUiNA> or am i mistaken
figushki has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<kepstin> with x264 specifically, that's approximately what it does yeah
<kepstin> other encoders work differently
figushki has joined #ffmpeg
<johnjaye> so if i want to target a file size i should do the two pass and specify the target bitrate and it will match crf to it instead of me having to guess it?

Keshl has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<kepstin> basically, yeah. the first pass encode collects statistics as it encodes and uses that to calculate a "constant rate factor" that is used as an adjustment to x264's constant-visual-quality per-frame bit allocation so the final result will have the desired average bitrate.
<kepstin> that's an oversimplified description of course.
<kepstin> to the best of my understanding, crf is an implementation detail of 2-pass encoding that they figured might also be useful for doing 1-pass encodes too :)

<Guest71> Hi all, I have scoured the internet but failed to find a good answer for this. I have a file with a name like myvideo%28abc12%29def.mp4 and I cannot find a way to pass it to ffprobe cli. I have tried escaping the "%" chars with backslashes, double and triple backslashing, but nothing seems to work. If anyone has an idea on how to make this work
<Guest71> that would be awesome. Thank you!
<cheapie> Guest71: I don't know what OS you're on, but did you try putting the file name in quotes?
<Guest71> I am on linux, I tried putting the filename in quotes and double quotes. No luck. The error I see is `[image2 0x59105d577f80] Could find no file with path <mypath> and index in the range 0-4` (it is actually an image, sorry the example filename above is a video, though I doubt it matters)
<kepstin> it does matter; images use a demuxer that's designed to read a series of files as a video, and the % is used as part of an escape for index numbers in files.
<kepstin> you can disable this by using the option "-pattern_type none"
<Guest71> oh my gosh kepstin you are a life saver! I figured there was some escape hatch in ffprobe, but I just could not find this problem documented anywhere. Thank you!

<johnjaye> Guest71: you can't rename the file?
<johnjaye> iirc there is a way to refer to a file by its inode and delete it if it has weird characters you can't type.
<Guest71> I cannot, and my problem is solved with -pattern_type none. I am going to drop from this chat for now. Thanks y'all
