<iconoclasthero>
just to confirm, ffmpeg cannot embed a cover image into the metadata for opus in ogg using a base64-encoded image the way that opusenc does?
<iconoclasthero>
it can only transcode the jpeg to theora and add it to the video stream... meaning it also cannot -vcodec copy (or ogg cannot accept) the jpeg to the video stream?
<furq>
there's a patch from 2022 but it doesn't look like it went anywhere
<furq>
opustags can do it in place at least
<iconoclasthero>
opustags is what i use, but i was trying to help someone with how audiobookshelf tries to do it with ffmpeg and he was getting errors.
<iconoclasthero>
when he said ffmpeg/ffprobe was saying it was in theora i was like wait a second.
<iconoclasthero>
it would be nice if the ogg container could accept a jpeg. it seems rather stupid it cannot if it can do multiplexing.
<furq>
well it can, that's the whole problem
<furq>
someone tried to be smart years ago and treat embedded artwork as a video stream
<furq>
which obviously doesn't work for containers that can have both
<furq>
that's why you need -disposition:v attached_pic for flac and mp4
<furq>
but for some reason that hasn't happened in the ogg muxer yet
<iconoclasthero>
who maintains the `libopus` i reference when i do ffmpeg -acodec libopus?
<furq>
xiph
<iconoclasthero>
and is that the muxer you refer to above?
<furq>
no that's the encoder
<iconoclasthero>
so that's ffmpeg then?
<furq>
the muxer is internal yeah
<furq>
i think all muxers are internal
<iconoclasthero>
i feel like tagging is something that is not part of the core competencies of ffmpeg.
<JanC>
metadata (which is more than just tagging) capabilities can be quite different between formats
<iconoclasthero>
so maybe opustags is a better way to do it, but in terms of long-term stability and maintenance of the tool, there are merits to using ffmpeg.
<iconoclasthero>
(for e.g., something like audiobookshelf)
