does anyone know if you can remove the duration data from a video file so if you open it with a program like mpv it doesn't display a runtime?
<furq>
probably not
<furq>
some formats don't have a duration header but mpv will estimate the duration of those
<furq>
for the ones that do all you could do is zero it
<furq>
which will obviously cause other problems
<JEEB>
in many cases the duration is calculated by the timestamps of all the packets for a stream, which means that it's not a single value
<JEEB>
and if you start playing with that, then you break the A/V sync since you're poking at the timestamps/durations of packets

<phos>
i wasn't sure if this was a thing you could do, bc when try to open a video that kdenlive is rendering it lets me but the duration is broken (the format i was rendering in is mkv)

can ffprobe report the duration of a .shn file?
<iconoclasthero>
I get N/A for `ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration -of default=noprint_wrappers=1:nokey=1 jgb78-03-18d1t01.shn` and `ffprobe -v quiet -show_entries format=duration -of csv=p=0 jgb78-03-18d1t01.shn`

hey all, ive been trying to re-encode an mkv file with hevc_vaapi but i keep getting this error: Impossible to convert between the formats supported by the filter 'Parsed_hwupload_1' and the filter 'auto_scale_0'.

xriiitox: that's nice. sounds like you've made a mistake in the command line options, which might depend on properties of the input file (which will be shown in the full command output).
<kepstin>
when sharing that information, please use a pastebin site.
<kepstin>
interesting. normally when you get that error, nothing works at all. this is hitting it because of a filter graph reconfiguration.

looks like dvd video input, switching from progressive to interlaced, perhaps?
<kepstin>
I'm not sure the vaapi encoders can handle that, in general :/
<kepstin>
that's happening after over 2 hours into the video stream - it's possible that the stuff it's getting hung up on is after the main video content - in which case you might want to just trim the video to end before that point.
