was scanning subjects of some older e-mails and saw an update for ccache - and it got me thinking - would ccache ever deliver any significant hit rate if it was effectively preempted by functional and populated sstate?
<paulg>
I know I largely nuked ccache from my workflow around 2010-ish, I would guess? Seemed like very little gain IMHO even back then (for what I was doing).
<fray>
my experience, ccache just complicates things especially debugging, when it goes wrong. and on the fairly powerful machines I have really doesn't improve performance
<paulg>
Okay, so that is pretty much in alignment with what I arrived at.

paulg: i'm absolutely using it whilst working on the clang recipes, i can build clang in 2 minutes!
<rburton>
in general though, yeah sstate wins

<paulg>
interesting.
<RP>
it is all about the context of what you're doing...
<paulg>
yep, totally get rburton example as a sensible use case - you intentionally nuke the sstate because you are fixing/testing build infrastructure and not the package itself.
<paulg>
so, sitting there chewing up electrons and precious time watching it compile for the 18th time is less than ideal.
<RP>
rburton: repro test went green :)
<rburton>
yay
<RP>
rburton: thanks. I'm taking that now :)

i'm trying to add cgroups.scc to my kernel but running build returns "Feature 'features/cgroups/cgroups.scc' not found, this will cause configuration failures"-- i'm not sure where i should be putting this?
<thirdapocalypse>
debug log says its using <path>/cgroups.scc for cgroups but still returns the same error-- build finished, but the do_kernel_metadata failed.

<thirdapocalypse>
hm, okay. .kernel-meta only contains a cfg directory which only has an empty scratch directory in it
<thirdapocalypse>
kernel-source/kernel does have cgroups files, though.
<paulg>
might want to look at temp/log.do_kernel_metadata in the linux-yocto pkg build dir for more details (I might not have log file name correct by memory - no build handy ATM)
<thirdapocalypse>
gotcha. all i'm getting is to check the SRC_URI -- i linked to the .scc file but i guess something else is missing.
<thirdapocalypse>
probably relevant; i'm modifying a yocto fork for a specific system, so the SRC_URI for the bb file is to their fork instead of the main yocto git.
<paulg>
well, at least you should now be looking in the relevant places, so I'm sure you'll figure it out.
<thirdapocalypse>
sounds good. thanks for the help!
<paulg>
you might also end up having to resort to "bitbake -e ..." to check paths/variables are sane, given your fork situation.
<paulg>
set up a "vanilla" (non-fork) build, follow the kernel-dev scc example, get things working there, and then compare to your forked version.

<khem>
ask the webkit/chromium developers about ccache, it saves the day when you are working on a monster project like that, where out of 50000 c++ sources only 1 needs to be recompiled and relinked
<khem>
which is 90% of the time the case during development
<paulg>
no doubt. I was implicitly thinking "typical yocto use case" when I posed the question.
<paulg>
I don't see working on webkit/chromium in my future. :)
<khem>
folks who use yocto with developer hat not with release engineer hat might find it useful too
<khem>
RP: rburton rv32 builds on AB magically started working yesterday onwards I wonder what changed
<khem>
was some patch from master-next dropped I wonder that fixed it
<fray>
I still have the work in my queue, but due to other priorities I haven't gottenback to it
