geertu: I don't think there is a good answer for this in the given constraints, which is also why I hadn't commented on it earlier. On the one hand, I'm currently working on having a (optionally) smaller defconfig build and welcome any driver we can stop having built-in, on the other hand this is the single most used ethernet driver by a long shot.

What I see is 33804020 bytes for a defconfig with stmmac, and 33538863 bytes less with stmmac=m, i.e. 265KB out of a total of 33MB

I just played around with it some more on other configs: for arm/stm32_defconfig, the vmlinux 3MB without networking, 4MB with networking, and the stmmac driver weighs in at 150KB or 5%
