No luck with that Pkgfile for nvidia-open ... I tried copying over the 10- and 90- and other files from the normal nvidia directory as well.
<stratofall>
It shows all the modules loaded. But it's not seeing the nvidia commands on the command line so I don't think it is installing properly all the way.
<stratofall>
like nvidia-modprobe or nvidia-xconfig are not there.

Figured it out. Install the normal nvidia driver first. Then install the nvidia-open driver after it. Reboot, load all modules, rerun dracut. Reboot one more time. Into X (i3) I go.
<stratofall>
Also, I only did the 6.16.3 kernel earlier to rule out if there was something funny with my kernel.

<jaeger>
You need to install both, yeah :)
<jaeger>
The nvidia-open package is only kernel modules
<jaeger>
I didn't think to mention that earlier, sorry... just made those today
<jaeger>
Glad to hear it worked, though
<stratofall>
Finishing a few more things. Then hopefully testing a few games in Steam. I really do appreciate the help I got from everyone. I was rather stumped. I possibly should have researched this GPU a bit more in Linux.
<jaeger>
Glad to see more folks trying to game in linux :)
<jaeger>
Do you play any controller games in steam?
<jaeger>
If not, no worries, but if you do, install game-devices-udev, it'll save you a lot of time
<stratofall>
Controller games I have the Dark Souls series, Elden Ring. And Sonic All star racing. A few others in there as well most likely like Dead Cells.
<stratofall>
Honestly... I've gamed on Linux for a long time. I own every single one of the original Loki Games from back in the day. I have the original Savage: The Battle for Newerth cd-rom that has Linux compat. And UT2003 and UT2004 discs. However, none of these games work anymore.
<stratofall>
At least not directly from the discs.
<jaeger>
Same, though it's much more of an open landscape these days with modern vulkan, proton, etc.
<stratofall>
My kids are super heavy into Minecraft at the moment. So I play a lot of that with them as well.
<stratofall>
I host a private Java server in a VM that is running Crux as well. The main OS on my server is Proxmox.
<jaeger>
Nice. I've been playing a bit of FTB evolution recently
<stratofall>
Ahh, a modpack type thing.
<stratofall>
I had to look it up.
<jaeger>
Yeah. I like the modpacks, not as much interested in the base game
<stratofall>
I've never tried any mods. But, my kids are still pretty happy with the base game.
<jaeger>
Nothing wrong with that, and it's good that you can play along with them
<stratofall>
I mostly just do the farming, and stuff for them. Bulding the XP's farms etc. Then they just do whatever. They are only 5 and 7 so...
<jaeger>
:)
<stratofall>
But, I am wondering now if the 4080Super or 7900xtx would be better in this machine for gaming. 5080 = open-driver, 4080Super = Closed driver, 7900xtx = amd driver <- just working
<stratofall>
Once I get what I need installed I might swap my cards around a bit and find out.
<jaeger>
I run a 7900GRE here for what that's worth, it mostly works great
<jaeger>
I have a 3080 Ti in another system but this one with the 7900 GRE is what I use 99% of the time
<jaeger>
Both even work with wayland sessions, though it took me a lot longer to make that work with nvidia than amd
<stratofall>
Yeah, the 7900xtx was pretty amazing. But I never had an issue with the 4080S either. Just needed to install drivers. The 5080 was the first card I had to try and figure out.
<jaeger>
Very interesting that the open modules were required... makes me wish I had a 5000-series card to test with but I don't really want to give nvidia any more money
<jaeger>
I think that nvidia wants the open modules to replace the closed entirely, but not 100% sure on that
<stratofall>
Well, I OC all my GPU's. Well, in other OS's. I'll need to see about building LACT on Crux.
<stratofall>
I water cool everything.
<stratofall>
Yeah, the open module will have to get good fast. Especially if the proprietary doesn't work on the 5xxx series.
<stratofall>
I honestly had no clue the proprietary didn't work with it.
<jaeger>
Same, I wonder if that's true of them all or if something was missing in this case
<jaeger>
[ 20.935590] NVRM: installed in this system requires use of the NVIDIA open kernel modules.
<stratofall>
I wonder if there is a way to tell if your running proprietary or open driver for nvidia. Because I can't see any differences in nvidia-settins or nvidia-smi
<jaeger>
That PCI ID matches the 5080
<jaeger>
I see these on my system where I installed those today:
<jaeger>
[ 4.095193] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX Open Kernel Module for x86_64 580.76.05 Release Build (root@ascension) Wed Aug 27 10:03:14 CDT 2025

[ 4.165171] nvidia-modeset: Loading NVIDIA UNIX Open Kernel Mode Setting Driver for x86_64 580.76.05 Release Build (root@ascension) Wed Aug 27 10:02:53 CDT 2025
<jaeger>
That's in the output of 'dmesg | grep -i nvidia'
<jaeger>
I'll check tomorrow on the other one which uses the closed modules for comparison
<jaeger>
Time to sleep, though, take care
<stratofall>
Thank you, have a good night.
