[Discord] <igorpec> did you have time to look into that patch?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <fbernier> sorry, I didn't catch you wanted me to do it. It's just a matter of removing the `.patch` file right ?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <fbernier> sorry, I didn't catch you wanted me to do it. It's just a matter of deleting the `.patch` file right ?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> in theory everything works, until its broken. And every upgrade can break one more more functions. if board is not supported, this stays broken
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Like switching phy chip to something else and call the variant "lts" 🤣 . Not calling any names
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> the variants drive me insane, just designate it a new model 😂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> i've actually not (yet) tried a rockchip board (e.g. orange pi has them)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> but the experience working orangepi zero 3 from zero to eventually works has been no easy feat
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> don't feel like venturing working those lose ends again
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> and hence i left those 'orangepi's rockchip boards alone
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> Kinda related, how is OrangePi’s hardware? I was considering on of their boards for a little while
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> orangepi pi zero 3 has been one of the *best* efforts from open source (and armbian and dietpi) community to make it work really
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> i *dislike* orange pi boards
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> chips like allwinner has *sparse* documentations
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> very little documentation , zero (software) support
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> the whole open source community
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> the world over (+ armbian + dietpi + some very talented fellows on from Arm I think)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> + those working on u-boot
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> made the orange pi zero 3 'supported' (it actually evolved 'long back' from orange pi zero 2) the predecessor
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> orangepi zero 3 is practically *reverse engineered*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> the whole of it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> That was the impression I was getting from their Amazon reviews too. I couldn’t explain why, but something about their operation felt “unprofessional” compared to RaspberryPi or Radxa. I’m glad I opted for another vendor
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> so much so that today armbian runs on it like it is 'native'
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> a lot of works from the armbian community, you can check that orangepi zero3 thread in the forum
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> Kinda related, how is OrangePi’s hardware? I was considering one of their boards for a little while
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> OPi boards themselves are more or less decent. But you have to keep in mind that when you buy, you buy the hw only. You don't buy any software with it. Companies like them leave proper sw development to open source projects like us and save a lot of money doing so since development is expensive. That is why the hw is so cheap.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> for one thing
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> 'many' buyers
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> get that orangepi pi zero 3 say
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> but actually runs armbian or dietpi on it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Yes, because vendor provided images are usually crap
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> some do run the 'vendor's images
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> i don't
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> but i just hope more of those who bought those boards and used armbian etc would literally support armbian
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> 'open source' is hardly 'easy', in fact it is 'very difficult'
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> now that armbian 25.x runs on orangepi zero 3
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> armbian is now many kernel versions ahead of even the vendors images
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> which if i remember still is like 6.1 kernel or something like such
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> 6.1 is rockchip bsp kernel. Armbian also has version with this branch, but still ahead of vendor.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> ah zero3. h618. no clue on which branch allwinner bsp is. they certainly did not do own development
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> either way orange pi zero 3 (that allwinner h618) board has rave reviews
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> even on aliexpress etc
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> and i've no doubts that it is partly because armbian runs on it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> it is a favourite os for that board
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> i doubt many are running the vendors images on it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> of course diet pi did much work on it as well and runs on it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> a decent amount of dietpi is based on Armbian 🙂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> the 3 source of images probably makes it a popular board as it practically becomes a board like Rpi 3
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <ag1234253> a thing about orangepi zero 3
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <random_anon_cesar> @ag1234253 convinced me. Gotta represent armbian & get some merch 😮💨
