a stupid question: are all dvds interlaced? or none? looking it up, i see a variety of claims from "they're all marked as interlaced but all progressive" to "film dvds are progressive but marked as interlaced and tv dvds are really interlaced" to "none of them are actually interlaced"
<furq>
definitely not the last one
System_Error has joined #ffmpeg
<furq>
they're all flagged as interlaced but some are progressive
<furq>
reading up now and i might be wrong about the flagging. but i have seen lots of content where the flags are incorrect so you can pretty much ignore those unless you're hardware
<furq>
you always have to check yourself
<aaabbb>
that's what i was seeing, was that no matter what it is, the interlace flag is not reliable for dvds
<aaabbb>
i guess the only way to determine is -vf idet?
<furq>
maybe idet got better but i usually just rely on framestepping
<furq>
with pal dvd in particular it seems to always be flagged as interlaced even when it's not
<aaabbb>
just giving someone advice on using ffmpeg to rip dvds and wanted to know if i should recommend -vf bwdif but of course i wasn't sure if it was really interlaced
<furq>
probably good for someone starting out to learn how to spot interlaced/pulldown/progressive by eye
<furq>
it will come up a lot

<furq>
i would also recommend qtgmc but i understand if you don't want to walk them through installing vapoursynth and then writing scripts
<furq>
i've definitely decided not to bother doing that before
<aaabbb>
yeah qtgmc is better but these are just dvds
<furq>
dvd is specifically where it does well in my experience
<furq>
i wouldn't bother for 1080i
<furq>
also because that would take forever
<aaabbb>
yeah but meaning that the quality is gonna be crappy anyway
<aaabbb>
and bwdif is good enough(tm)
<furq>
i'm usually dealing with tv shows where that's the best quality source there is
<aaabbb>
if ffmpeg supported qtgmc then i'd certainly recommend it. i wonder why it hasn't been added
<furq>
even when that stuff shows up on vod platforms it usually has awful mistakes

furq: libzmq3-dev comes from ubuntu repo 2404.. so maybe. However libprotokit.a is not part of libzmq (on ubuntu) instead it comes from libnorm-dev
