<znf> I'm trying to transcode something on Windows, with hevc_amf, but I can't get it to work at all
<znf> as in, the process will just... exit
<znf> not even anything complex, just:
<znf> ffmpeg -v debug -i "T:\stream.mp4" -map 0 -c:v hevc_amf -b:v 5000k -y test.mp4

<bpmedley> znf: Do you suspect ffmpeg ran via ShareX is being launched with different command line options?
<bpmedley> And/or do you have multiple ffmpeg.exe binaries on your system?
<znf> bpmedley, no, and no, I'm using the same one in both
realies9 has joined #ffmpeg
<bpmedley> znf: Immediately after you run ffmpeg.exe manually, would you run "echo %ERRORLEVEL%" without quotes?
<znf> sure
<znf> -1073741819
<bpmedley> 1073741819 is ffffffffc0000005 so it's an Access Violation Windows exception
<znf> So something about permissions
<znf> hold on, let me try as admin
<znf> nope, same thing as admin, weird
<znf> but hevc_nvenc works fine
<bpmedley> https://stackoverflow.com/questions/60170931/what-does-ffmpeg-exit-code-1073741819-mean ### What version of FFmpeg are using? See the 1 answer here?
<znf> ffmpeg version N-120264-g9c55f22ef2-20250715
<bpmedley> Is that a daily?

<znf> bpmedley, yes, from Bt*
<bpmedley> znf: Might want to try a few version(s) back or the official release?
<bpmedley> However, the reason FFmpeg would work from ShareX is confusing
<bpmedley> znf: Are you in the same working directory for both FFmpeg invocations?
<znf> I tried in different work directories, where I should be having permissions
<znf> again, it works if I use hevc_nvenc instead
<bpmedley> And, when you get the access violation you’re in the same working directory, both for the command line and for the ShareX invocation?
Shine_ has joined #ffmpeg
<znf> I've no idea where ShareX runs it from
vlt has quit [Server closed connection]
vlt has joined #ffmpeg
<znf> those are just presets, should be working without
<bpmedley> And, will you try them?
<znf> actually the reason I was running it via CLI was to figure out *why* `-usage high_quality` when set in ShareX doesn't work
<znf> specifically, I tried with the Custom CLI from ShareX and I removed not-necessary parameters
<znf> and no, running the *default* CLI that ShareX displays does not work
<bpmedley> Is there a command line option that ShareX displays, when FFmpeg is functional?
<znf> unfortunately not
<znf> it just shows what it will *probably* use
Fiji has joined #ffmpeg
<bpmedley> Would you take a screenshot of ShareX with HEVC / NVENC selected?
<znf> man, fuck AMD
<znf> it's bugging me
<bpmedley> znf: Is there a "transcoding" or somesuch in the Tune pulldown? Feels like there are one or two command line arguments that differ between hevc_amf and hevc_nvenc. If it was me, I would try a few different sets of options
<znf> that just fails completely
<znf> but, like I said, works fine from ShareX (except when you use stuff like `transcoding` tune and high_quality which... I have no idea why)
function1_ has joined #ffmpeg
<bpmedley> I can’t tell if you’re saying, with a certain set of options in ShareX that FFmpeg sometimes works with hevc_amf and sometimes does not.
<znf> no.
<bpmedley> So, hevc_amf always fails in both ShareX and cli?
<znf> My __original__ issue was that I was trying to figure out why with some `-tuning` profiles, hevc_amf won't work. Most options work, but I was tryign specifically `transcoding` and `quality balanced` and those refused to work.
<znf> ...so my normal troubleshooting process was to just copy the CLI arguments that ShareX uses, and run it manually against a file on disk, just to figure out *which* parameters make it fail *in ShareX*
<bpmedley> When you say most options work, are you saying that usually FFmpeg via ShareX runs successuflly when using hevc_amf?
<znf> unfortunately, I removed parameters from the ffmpeg CLI to try to transcode a video with hevc_amf, until I realized that none of those parameters are actually failing: the issue is that hevc_amf does __not__ work AT ALL when run via CLI, no matter how "bare bones" the arguments are
<znf> ie: something as simple as:
function1 has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<znf> `ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v hevc_amf out.mp4` should work just fine
<furq> you should be able to see how ffmpeg gets called in the details tab in task manager
<znf> at least, if something *is wrong* ffmpeg *should* just tell me that there's an actual issue (something about pixel format, or who knows)
<znf> now, I don't care *that* much about ShareX in this case -- I'm just baffled that when run *from* ShareX, it works, hevc_amf works, but from CLI (even run as Administrator) it doesn't
<furq> well i guess that would tell you if there's some specific option that it needs
<bpmedley> Sounds like you need to get the exact set of command line arguments ShareX is using.
<furq> but also you are correct that amf sucks
<bpmedley> Feels like the previously mentioned task manager is the next step
<znf> next question would be how the hell do I manage to do that, because the transcodes are done very quickly
<znf> oh right, dumb me, while recording it's shown
<znf> ok, so I confirmed that is the actual CLI used
<BtbN> Windows famously just shows NOTHING if a cli application crashes
<BtbN> you got to look at event viewer to find out
<BtbN> Yeah, so it's just crashing
<bpmedley> znf: And, you’re saying the exact same cli that ShareX uses does not work via cli?
<BtbN> Good luck figuring out where and how with driver code involved...
<znf> bpmedley, exactly
<znf> BtbN, it bugs me that it works via ShareX, same CLI
<BtbN> Same ffmpeg binary?
<znf> yup
<BtbN> not much else to do than to attach a debugger and see where it crashes
<znf> I've no idea how to debug stuff on Windows, can't even figure out how to look at the error reports lol
<znf> 'cause it says I need permissions, but when I check the advanced tab/permission, it says I have full perms
<BtbN> run it through gdb.exe in msys2, and make sure you build a debug version for it to be useful
<znf> thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think I'll be doing that tonight :D
<znf> follow-up question though -- the actual initial issue was that I was trying to use -pix_fmt rgba
<znf> and for some reasons, my video ends up as yuvj420p https://123.456.ro/share/2025/07/Discord_ff7NKH3iqf.mp4
BUSY has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<znf> The ffmpeg binary does report:
<znf> Supported pixel formats: nv12 yuv420p d3d11 dxva2_vld p010le amf bgr0 rgb0 bgra argb rgba x2bgr10le rgbaf16le
<znf> for encoder=hevc_amf
<znf> so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work
<bpmedley> znf: When you run from ShareX, and it works, are you using in.mp4 or gdigrab?
<znf> gdigrab or directshow (dshow)
<znf> (both work)
<bpmedley> Would you try the in.mp4? Is that possible via ShareX?
<znf> nope
<bpmedley> And gdigrab via cli does not work?
<znf> no, same thing - crashes binary
<bpmedley> Do you have anti-virus software running?

<furq> the input shouldn't really make any difference unless it returns hardware frames or something
