i begin to believe that n9 and even more n950 support is less and less viable
<Smatkovi>
my n950 has some mmc failures and chatgpt is telling me it will be useless any moment
<Smatkovi>
unless one can resolder one that device is a dead horse
<Smatkovi>
or is gpt exaggerating?

<uvos__>
not really
<uvos__>
its a very bad sign
<uvos__>
depending on the error exactly - could be software related, but if the vendor kernel has mmc errors in dmesg its probubly close to the end for that device
<uvos__>
replaceing the mmc is very very hard, you need to have a way to solder a bga device and a method to get the bootloader on it before soldeirng it down
<uvos__>
the device is most likely toast
<Wizzup>

Wizzup: btw we still need to find a way to start cellulard later (sms lost)
<arno11>
i'm starting it from desktop for a while now to avoid the issue
<arno11>
but also needs to remove modem starting from gps-nokia-n900...
<arno11>
i think i made a MR for that, not sure, will check
<arno11>
apparently not
<freemangordon>
arno11: check when fremantle starts telepathy-ring
<freemangordon>
it is not that we shall start cellulard later, but we shall start tp-ring before it
<freemangordon>
IIUC
<arno11>
i yes indeed, now i remember, but the problem is that tp ring starts very very late on leste

Wizzup: yes, it matters, there is no other way to guarantee that no SMS-es will be lost. tp-ring must be running by the time modem gets onlined, no?
pere has joined #maemo-leste
<Wizzup>
freemangordon: so both tp-ring and cellulard can be running, as long as cellulard doesn't online modem yet
<Wizzup>
in which order they start does not matter, cellulard just needs to not online modem too soon
<freemangordon>
how would it know when to online it?
<Wizzup>
follow dbus
<Wizzup>
I think we had this exact discussion before
<freemangordon>
not the same think
<freemangordon>
at least i don;t remember, but that could be my aging memory :)
pere has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<freemangordon>
so, you think cellulard waiting for tp-ring CM dbus name to appear on dbus is the proper approach?
<freemangordon>
hmm, that could be a parameter, not hardcoded

<Smatkovi>
maybe one can put an mmc from an n9 onto an n950?
<Smatkovi>
then droid4 is really the more sustainable choice. one can just replace the sdcard after it died
Gary_M has joined #maemo-leste
<Smatkovi>
it would have been nice to have dualboot with beautiful meego and functional maemo
_fab has quit [Quit: _fab]
GaryM_ has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<sicelo>
Smatkovi: your N9 also have emmc issues?
<Smatkovi>
i haven't checked
<kiva>
Smatkovi: I think there is(/was) two solution for dualboot. One was repartition emmc with gparted and another was in one partition solution..I think somewhere talk.maemo.org there is more information.
<Smatkovi>
yes ubiboot, that wasn't working at all for neither meego nor maemo. then i wanted to try moslo dualboot, but repartitioning failed
<Smatkovi>
so i flashed meego with erase mmc and erase userdata, but that hang and i also couldn't flash mmc
<Smatkovi>
then i tried repartitioning manually and there seemed to be a few bad sectors on the mmc
<Smatkovi>
i have one other n950 that i bricked, because i deleted the mtd4 partition, because i used mtd5 for swap and wanted to put ubiboot on mtd4, because ubiboot kernel was too big to flash
<Smatkovi>
it had only 512mb ram anyway
<kiva>
if bad sectors are in some where middle of mmc then make 3 partitions and include all bad sectors in second partition.
<kiva>
is there any emergency solutions for N950 to fix bricked mmc?
<Smatkovi>
i don't know how i find out where the bad sectors are easily
<Smatkovi>
chatgpt wrote something about jtag connection, but it's not documented how that would connect
<Smatkovi>
if there are pins to soldier on a connection or in a different way
<kiva>
I think there is solution to see bad sector numbers, and have to give partion sizes with sectors..not easy task, somebody old school linux guy might help.
<Smatkovi>
i was happy i maintained the 1Gb version afterwards, but i'm unsure now if i should still repartition it and try maemo on it
<Smatkovi>
i feel like it will die anytime the more i use the mmc, but maybe that's just something like hypochondria i'm not sure
<sicelo>
N950 is 512MB RAM? not 1GB?
<kiva>
I have only repartitioned N900 so I cannot say does it goes same way with N9(50).
<kiva>
sicelo: rare silver version had only 512MB.
<Smatkovi>
the prototype was silver, had 512mb of ram and had 64gb storage, then there is apparently a 512mb ram version in black with 16gb storage, which i am talking about and the final version with 1gb ram and 16gb storage
<Smatkovi>
i also have the silver n950, but i made two black spots in it
<Smatkovi>

on my droid4 the 1year old cheap sdcard seems to have died. i think i need to get a sandisk, that has more quality i believe
arno11 has quit [Quit: arno11]
<kiva>
yes, cheap sdcards can go to state that look like died, if it is under 32GB these cards some how show up in Silvering Pro with old PPC Macs and it let format it and after that card show up to another OS again. I have fixed two cards that way.
<kiva>
*Silverlining Pro
<Smatkovi>
yes it's under 32gb
<Smatkovi>
did you javwe ll
<Smatkovi>
sfy
<Smatkovi>
did you have to do that more than once, so can it fail sometimes later on again?
<Smatkovi>
and then formatting is necessary again
<kiva>
both cards works these days. Yes you should to format it again for another OS.
