<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: You upgraded to 7.7 OpenBSD yet?
<remiliascarlet>
farkuhar: I'm a user of all 3 major BSDs actually. But OpenBSD just feels the most solid and most complete, but also the most opinionated which does stand in the way of certain things.
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: 'He (Mr Andrews) went down to the local hotel, he paid for his meal and all of his mates,' Mr Scholte said. <-- That sentence is kind of find. He paid for all of his mates. In otherwords he can't get friends so he has to buy them. :-P
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh_: No, I didn't use Alpha, VAX, or the others. By the time I touched a computer for the first time, PC's were already a common household item.
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh_: Yes, I already have all my servers and 64-bit laptops on OpenBSD. Doing 32-bit laptops next.
<remiliascarlet>
So far the most painless upgrade yet.
<remiliascarlet>
s/OpenBSD/OpenBSD 7.7
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: Cool, did you read the line about Perl?
<SiFuh_>
Perl has been updated to 5.40.1 and some files are no longer needed.
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: I have a feeling this is deception and I wouldn't trust even the truth from Alex Soros filthy trap.
<remiliascarlet>
There is some truth to it. We know that the Soros family are Ashkenazi Jews, and that the far left has gone full blown nazi/anti-semite since the start of the latest edition of Israel vs Palestine. And that Soros has been interfering with US politics for decades, even as foreign residents.
<SiFuh_>
So some dudes Pit Bull in penang escaped and apparently bit 5 or 6 people which I don't believe for a second. So now Penang MBPP has put them on the banned list
<SiFuh_>
The entire Pit Bull thing is a lie. They are the most loyal dogs to ever exist in the dog world. Hence the sport of dog fighting.
<remiliascarlet>
Yes, I know they're more communist than nazi, and that "nazi" is actually a derigotory word for "national socialist", the point of calling them "nazi" is because they've been calling all the rest of us who are on the right of the extreme far left "nazi", and they absolutely hate being called "nazi", we should give them the world they wanted.
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh_: Have you noticed that "Free, functional, and secure" has the same abbreviation as "fast file system"?
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: And still no new song
<SiFuh_>
ukky: https://i.snipboard.io/klXnC7.jpghttps://i.snipboard.io/MPg29D.jpg Installed some mud flaps on the truck so that the Transport Department doesn't give me a ticket. Held on only by 2 x 8mm bolts each. :-P They will be unbolted and removed before going off-road though. It's only to stay within compliance
<SiFuh_>
I don't give a damn if it actually doesn't function the way mud flaps work
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Heh, I just sent the MSN one to dlcusa 3 minutes before you did
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: Does that kind of unwritten still exist today in Japan where you insult your boss while you were drunk and he doesn't fire you?
<SiFuh_>
unwritten rule*
<farkuhar>
zorz: You are aware of the line "preferhigher yes" in prt-get.conf, right? If you don't comment it out, then sysup should leave your python 3.13 alone, not try to replace it with python 3.12.
<farkuhar>
zorz: The problem with deviating from the python3 version endorsed by the core team is that you then have to override the warnings about footprint mismatches (builds that result in /usr/lib/python3.13 instead of /usr/lib/python3.12). At that point you might as well maintain your own port collections, and not rely on the official repos (even with deepthought-style post-sync hooks that manually adjust the footprints).
<SiFuh_>
zorz: farkuhar is zorzing you.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Bloody hell. I have told this guy that just because our door is open, doesn't mean you can just walk into my house and sit down. And yet, he still does.
<SiFuh_>
I was upstairs talking to the wife. Then said to her "Why is there a guy in our house downstairs?" She quickly goes to look and there he is sitting at dining table. Like fucking hell man. Do that when the wife isn't here, you'd like have your head lopped off

<ppetrov^>
ppetrov^, even asked farkuhar a question in #crux
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: Yes, it's inexcusable to allow so much time to elapse with no respose to your statement
<ppetrov^>
SiFuh_, yes, the very ppetrov^ himself addressed farkuhar after all...
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: It was sarcasm to something farkuhar said in #crux-musl.
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: This one [farkuhar> If the devs no longer want to use IRC to field the questions and concerns of long-time users, then at least as a courtesy they could state their preferred mode of communication (Gitea issues, mailing list, ...). It's inexcusable to allow so many days to elapse with no respose to SiFuh's criticism of the /etc/rc abomination.
<ppetrov^>
ah btw, wlan somehow does not bring my wifi up, but it works when i follow the steps from the HandBook
<SiFuh_>
Not a fan of Wi-Fi. Rarely use it myself.
<SiFuh_>
Unfortunately more and more laptops are not coming with ethernet ports anymore.
<farkuhar>
ppetrov^: Hush, don't open a new Gitea issue saying they screwed up /etc/rc.d/wlan. beerman might interpret it as permission to insert glitter and eye candy into a script that is otherwise pretty boring.
<ppetrov^>
well, i am not sure if its's an issue or i did not configure something
<ppetrov^>
i normally use connman but it did not work
<ppetrov^>
networkmanager did not work either
<ppetrov^>
and on crux, networkmanager has given me a log of headach when running under xfce
<ppetrov^>
messes up with the diplay session or sth, when i try to enter my wifi password
<ppetrov^>
on 3.7 there were issues with mouse or styarting x
<ppetrov^>
on 3.6.1 some other crap
<ppetrov^>
on Slackware nm works flawlessly
<ppetrov^>
just saying
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: You just said ;-)
<farkuhar>
wpa_supplicant installs its own script under /etc/rc.d , so you can completely bypass the CRUX script /etc/rc.d/wlan , replacing one entry in the SERVICES array with two: dhcpcd and wpa_supplicant.
<farkuhar>
Or you can omit dhcpcd from the SERVICES array, and just use the hooks that wpa_supplicant provides, for when a wireless interface is activated.
<ppetrov^>
well, as i said i am not sure if i messed sth
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: Nah it was probably beerman
<SiFuh_>
Hehehe remiliascarlet "All Asian TV's look the same. Well maybe not to Asians but to me they do" Drybar Comedy

[SiFuh_> I think revdep is one of CRUX's greatest tools
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: And beerman :-P Hahaha
<SiFuh_>
Bahahahaha he is interested in the BSD style init system
<SiFuh_>
And has no idea it is fucked.
<SiFuh_>
And beerman is just talking like it is his gift from god
<SiFuh_>
Hehe :-) sorry dudes. I had to vent some steam :-P
<SiFuh_>
You couldn't do that in Australia because of privacy laws. I remember suggesting photos of serial runners in the Taxi newspaper and it was struck down due to privacy rights
<ppetrov^>
vent vent
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: Yes
<SiFuh_>
I will do the rc fix in May as I said in #crux ppetrov^
<SiFuh_>
I will keep the beerman stuff but it needs to be cleaned up properly.
<ppetrov^>
SiFuh_, okease do, and let's hope it makes CRUX better
<ppetrov^>
i feel kinda bad about farkuhar , all I did was whine that on my PC new findredundanddeps -s does not work, but I have no idea why and how to fix
<SiFuh_>
Yeah I saw but it is kind of beyond me so I can't help. Conman, NM and whatever just sucked for me. I preferred the CRUX way
<ppetrov^>
well, i finally learned how to use wpa_supplicant, and it required 2 rows in the terminal
<ppetrov^>
when i have things set up i will see why the network does not start automatically
<ppetrov^>
some problem with PID, i suspect, and I have no idea what PID is
<ppetrov^>
see the source of my confusion?
<ppetrov^>
ah, i go for another beer
<ppetrov^>
when I say "beer" you think "beerman", don't you?

ppetrov^: Just checked on my CRUX 3.7 (glibc) laptop. The SERVICES array contains wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd, but not wlan.
<ppetrov^>
i am still updating my ports
<ppetrov^>
almost done, except for the R ecosystem, whi I do tomorrow
<ppetrov^>
after that i'll investigate when i have time
<farkuhar>
I tend to put wpa_supplicant early, and dhcpcd last. I can't remember if I encountered some race condition if they get started in the other order, but it seems to be less error-prone if dhcpcd is started later.
<ppetrov^>
no, somehow wpa_supplcant script did notconnect to my wifi at at all
<farkuhar>
You did remember to populate /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf using /usr/sbin/wpa_passphrase, right?
<SiFuh_>
zorz: Can you explain to me like a human and not a zorz from planet zorz this LVM shit you were talking about in rc?
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: From what I understand, the existence and executability of /sbin/lvm should not be the sole criterion for starting the vgscan and vgchange commands. Some users might have lvm2 installed, without having set up any logical volumes.
<ppetrov^>
farkuhar, yes, I have internet if I follow the steps in the handbook
<ppetrov^>
in put the in rc.local to start in the background
<SiFuh_>
ppetrov^: My problem with the other network managing tools was constant disconnections. And I know that only one could run at a time. In the end I found only the rc.d wlan script would keep it stable.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Oh so it is a disk scanning issue? But that would also mean during shutdown those LVM2 drives would need to be unmounted even if there were no LVM2 drives mounted? Yes?
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: I'm not sure, you'd have to ask zorz. I haven't used LVM2 on any recent installs.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: I did, but you decided to interject
<SiFuh_>
Hahaha
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Did you see beermans comment about pushing a patch? Like I am his maid or something. Here to clean up his bullshit. I didn't directly comment on it that if I had pushed a patch, he'd probably ignore it.
<SiFuh_>
The other one I never commented on was his comment about others snobbing it off. So basically he was hiding behind others and their justification was reason to ignore me. Like a coward hiding.
<SiFuh_>
I really wish he'd grow up and accept his mistakes
<SiFuh_>
A little bit of humility isn't a bad thing
<SiFuh_>
And the colour thing is fine. I've nothing against it even though it doesn't actually work on most peoples systems.
<SiFuh_>
ANd the option to disable it was a good call.
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: If you're too busy to work on a patch tonight, I can spend some time on it. But I agree, it shouldn't be anyone else's burden to clean up beerman's mess.
<SiFuh_>
The problem is I'd need to install 3.8 and then test it. But if you want a go, then sure. I can review it. But please take into consideration that this is the init system. The heart of booting. So the code really needs to be pure and clean. Since they are using bash these days and bash has some fail safes.. hence beermans code working even though it should't. Then sure. I will review it.
<SiFuh_>
And I think jue should review it too.
<SiFuh_>
Since he was the rc script writer back in the day is very skilled in shall scripting
<farkuhar>
As for `findredundantdeps -s` (suggest mode), it appears to be an issue with quoting and separating arguments (whitespace versus newlines). `comm -23` expects newline-separated input files, and the input it's currently receiving might be whitespace-separated instead.
<SiFuh_>
shell*
<SiFuh_>
But the beerman stuff is an easy fix. The zorz lvm stuff... Hmm I think this needs attention.
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: All good. I was actually planning to revert back to the rc 2.32 tag, and introduce the colour functions in a saner manner. We'll wait for zorz to chime in regarding /sbin/lvm.
<SiFuh_>
agreed brother farkuhar!
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: I have tiles to drill tomorrow but I think to postpone it because I don't seem to be able to find a themeral camera. So maybe I do an CRUX install tomorrow instead.
<SiFuh_>

<SiFuh_>
How many mistakes did I make?
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Wonder if jaeger will reply. Will be cold if he doesn't. I have known him longer than any of the other CRUX users, including jue and consider him a friend.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: To be honest, I think they have lost interest. Lost the 'fun' as darfo would have said.
<SiFuh_>
I think they just dumped their shit on beerman and he is the go to guy to get it done.
<SiFuh_>
probably have more chance being accepted than if it was sent by me anyways.

<farkuhar>
zorz_: Tell us what's the problem with [ -x /sbin/lvm ] in /etc/rc
<zorz_>
aaaaaaaa
<zorz_>
first of all now i run runnit, and because i play with the init, this is why i did this rescue script.
<farkuhar>
zorz_: Please explain it slowly, for those of us who aren't as familiar with LVM2. What else needs to be tested before running the vgscan and vgchange commands?
<zorz_>
now the problem.... with /sbin/lvm is that it checks for the binary and if the binary exists... it takes granted that i have encrypted mounts
<zorz_>
this is wrong
<zorz_>
the binary exists.... but 5% of people have encrypted something
<zorz_>
it needs to check something like
<zorz_>
let me see
<zorz_>
if [ -x /sbin/vgchange ]; then msg "Activating LVM devices..." /sbin/vgchange -a y >/dev/null
<zorz_>
fi
<zorz_>

<zorz_>
let me see and void what it does

yeap and void the same
<zorz_>

<zorz_>
fi
<zorz_>
wrong
<zorz_>

<ppetrov^>
goodling says this happens because of ipv6
<ppetrov^>
well, should i disable it because of a fucking browser?! firefox is just fine
<farkuhar>
My guess is that zorz_ would prefer something other than /bin/dmesg as the command that fills up /var/log/boot. And yes, beerman would be the intended audience for this suggestion, since nobody else seems to be concerned enough to work on /etc/rc these days.
<farkuhar>
I wonder whether zorz_ has read the bootlogd man-page. It says that the output isn't very human-readable with all the embedded control characters, and a special-purpose readbootlog(1) is available to make reading easier.
