<jackdaniel> g-gundam: great work, I really enjoy using this library
<jackdaniel> I think that the author rather died than lost interest -- he was very responsive and then some day -radio silence ever since
<g-gundam> jackdaniel: I kinda wish someone in the sharplispers org would accept my pull request. I have https://g-gundam.github.io/lparallel/ setup, but I'd rather it be https://sharplispers.github.io/lparallel/ .

<jackdaniel> I can do that, but would it be too much to ask for including ECL on the list of supported implementations? :3
<jackdaniel> (looking at the changes now)
<g-gundam> Sure, I an do that.
<jackdaniel> generally looks good, there are no controversial changes -- only a cleanup
<jackdaniel> except from including highlight.js, but oh well, nobody is perfect (:
<g-gundam> What's wrong with highlight.js?
<jackdaniel> author name is James M. Lawrence, perhaps putting full name as author would be better?
<jackdaniel> -- nothing, I just don't like html highlighters

<jackdaniel> fe[nl]ix: is it OK if I merge these changes? I have the commit bit, so /technically/ I can, but I wouldn't go as far as claiming a decident role ,p
<g-gundam> jackdaniel: I haven't been in this repo in a few months. Getting reacquainted with what I did...
<jackdaniel> sure thing; if fe[nl]ix doesn't veto that, I'll merge changes. after looking into it there's nothing that would raise an eyebrow (and no code changes)

<attila_lendvai> phantomics, yep

<phantomics> And speaking of architecture work, I've just been working on compiling ECL on IBM Z mainframes via IBM's RHEL version compiled for System Z

<phantomics> Thanks attila_lendvai
<phantomics> And interesting ColinRobinson
<phantomics> C software is supposed to build pretty easily in the Z-compatible Linux OSes
<ColinRobinson> c is supposed to compile everywhere
<ColinRobinson> even current Unisys MCP does
<ColinRobinson> c and algol being pretty close
Pixel_Outlaw has joined #commonlisp
<phantomics> It may be something to do with the GC
<ColinRobinson> in c? there's none
<phantomics> The ECL GC
<ColinRobinson> ah
<phantomics> ECL does fully build but once it gets to the stage where ECL is called to bootstrap itself it segfaults
<ColinRobinson> sad
<ColinRobinson> oh you mean in ur Z port
<phantomics> The fix may be straightforward, I'll see
<phantomics> Not a port, just building ECL on Z inside its RHEL distro
<ColinRobinson> actually would be like OS/2 if you were targeting zOS
<phantomics> Does OS/2 also have different filetypes at the OS level for things like text, key/value stores etc.? Probably doesn't have all the virtualization features of Z
<ColinRobinson> yes in fact i was the contractor that did the filesystem perf finals at IBM boca for NTFS vs HPFS
<phantomics> Cool
<ColinRobinson> but it seems one of us maybe conflating fs with extended attributes
<phantomics> IBM was evaluating those FSes for their use?
<ColinRobinson> MCP as the most natural use of extended attributes i've ever seen but theres a pkg for EXT
<ColinRobinson> *has the
<phantomics> It's my understanding that Z's different datasets have optimizations at low levels in the OS according to their types: partitioned, sequential, key/value and those other special ones
<ColinRobinson> will it was before the ruptured of the IBM-MS JDA
<ColinRobinson> just b4 it
<ColinRobinson> *rupture
<ColinRobinson> well iiuc zOS is a merge of all the legacy OSes, but mainly VM and MVS
<phantomics> You can have different types of files on a *nix as well but I don't think their grouping by type is as pervasive
<ColinRobinson> which kinda boils down to MVS
<phantomics> Lots of the internal stuff still says MVS this and that
<phantomics> Running JCL also gives you an "N cards read" notice, which is a hoot
<ColinRobinson> all legacy OSes preserve their tab features
<ColinRobinson> *well it was

<phantomics> attila_lendvai, I tried the script but I don't have Guix. Thanks for the tip on downloading only that folder from LLVM. I found where tblgen is on my system, do I also need to download the /llvm/include/ folder from the repo?
<phantomics> It looks like it's a needed argument for the tblgen command
<attila_lendvai> phantomics, i think you need to get the .tb files from the source. but make sure that the version of your tablegen exe and the .tb files match.
<attila_lendvai> phantomics, you need them for sure, but i doubt they are packaged in any distro
<attila_lendvai> phantomics, also, you can install guix as a per-user package manager. it's great stuff, i'm running guix system on my laptop
<phantomics> Hmm, there are no .tb files in the X86 dir, or is that in the /includes?
<phantomics> I just downloaded it but I got an error: guix build: error: failed to connect to `/var/guix/daemon-socket/socket': No such file or directory
<attila_lendvai> phantomics, the script should tell you where they are, check the -I args. the dir structure in the guix source package should be the same as the git repo
<attila_lendvai> phantomics, i never used it on a foreign distro. i think you need to start the build daemon (under your user)

<inline> RavenJoad, if the systems components are to be used on their own then the first approach otherwise the second
<RavenJoad> inline: At least right now, the sub-system (chilog) is more going to be a library than an application. I am personally leaning towards 1 ASD per piece, but am missing something. chilog.asd is being found by asdf despite me not mentioning it to SBCL or the top-level ASD when running an ASDF command.

<inline> asdf has places it looks for things, if you put your places into that you don't have to mention it again
<inline> asdf is nice compared to my option here with defsystem and whatnot....
<inline> got a lib that has it's own crude loader
<inline> works with logical-pathnames mostly etc....
<inline> i'll use that but also port a part to asdf when possible later on

<inline> trying to write tls/ssl for an old lib which has no builtin https handling...
<inline> gah, so many things
<attila_lendvai_> phantomics, that's strange. maybe you need to guix pull to get a recent version?
notzmv has joined #commonlisp
<attila_lendvai_> phantomics, guix in the other distros is usually rather old because of the rolling release nature of guix (distros prefer packaging releases)

<RavenJoad> What I mean is that inside my project, I have Repos/chil/chil.asd and Repos/chil/chilog.asd. ASDF's source-registry.conf has (:tree (:home "Repos")) in its :source-registry. When I do (asdf:load-asd "chil.asd"), ASDF somehow finds chilog.asd as well. I'm just trying to figure out if this is expected behavior.
<inline> :tree is recursive
<inline> if you used :directory just then it won't be recursive
<attila_lendvai_> phantomics, if you're not interested in guix for other reasons than this, then you can just check the version of your tablegen binary and get the right .tb files somehow...

<inline> yes it is expected behaviour with :tree
<RavenJoad> Ok. So I should expect this to break in CI then. Good to know. Just gotta add this asd file to my Makefile then.
<phantomics> attila_lendvai, I was thinking about that, I would also need the /include dir
<phantomics> I tried directing the script the the LLVM dir for /include instead of LLVM_SRC but then I got another problem

<attila_lendvai> phantomics, i've also been there before i went all the way and wrote the current script
<phantomics> So I figure it's better to just install that stuff wholesale
